Second lefty update

On The Score, George Offman said that Javier Lopez may be the leading candidate for the job. Offman compared Lopez's delivery to Kelly Wunsch. He also said that Kenny could still swing a trade for another reliever but most teams aren't looking to move pitching at this point in Spring Training.

Lopez has been really effective and four others have yet to let up an earned run. It is still way to early but I figure Almanza and Malone are out of the running.

it is between Munoz and Lopez. Bentz might be a dark horse however I doubt he makes the team.

Every inning counts for these guys. They all have a small window of opportunity to show their stuff in Spring Training and since Lopez already got a second look and performed decent, then he is clearly the front runner. The next group will get their second look today or tomorrow.

 

Also, most relief pitchers will only see about 15 - 20 innings in ST, so Lopez's 2 1/3 is about 10% of his ST appearances.

I am thinking Munoz, Bentz and Tucker will be the main 3 to watch...even though Lopez thus far is very interesting and could put the pressure on those 3.

I wouldn't discount Ray Liotta being considered for the bullpen. He can throw strikes, keep the ball in the park, and throw more than an inning at a time. I know he has more value as a SP should someone get hurt, but if he could help the big league club by getting outs, I don't see that hurting his development.

He can get lit up for 5 runs next outing and then what? It's too early.

Right now, Arnie Munoz and Javier Lopez are the guys to watch. Munoz has looked good so far and has the advantage of being out of options so the Sox may not want to lose him. Lopez has the funky submarine/sidearm delivery that could help him get lefties out.

Unless both guys are lights out from here on in, and throw nothing but strikes, Bentz and Tucker punched their tickets back to the minors. They looked horrible in Sat's game. I know it's "early". Yet those kind of putrid performances will stick in Coops and Ozzie's mind all spring. Both looked worse than Kevin Walker, and with less control.

Randolph with a brutal outing today. Alamanza threw the ball pretty well. Reynoso pitched a scoreless inning, but he wasn't very sharp at all. Gave up a single, hit a batter and just missed giving up a two run bomb.

Thanks for posting that. I'm still convinced our best candidates (aside from a trade) are the in house ones. Munoz would be the front-runner in my mind.
