SSH2005
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines Sox make minor repairs By Phil Rogers Tribune baseball reporter March 4, 2006, 8:09 PM CST Hoping to put together a winner at Triple-A Charlotte after going a combined 75 games below .500 the last five seasons, the White Sox have signed a group of interesting players who don't appear to fit in the big leagues. Ben Grieve, the 1998 American League Rookie of the Year who played for the Cubs the last two years, was a non-roster invitee to the big-league camp. Outfielder J.J. Davis, the eighth overall pick in the 1997 draft; Ruben Rivera, the former super-prospect booted by the Yankees for allegedly stealing Derek Jeter's glove, and former Mariners first baseman-folk hero Bucky Jacobsen report to the minor-league camp with Brazilian mystery man Anderson Gomes this week. Jacobsen blasted 35 home runs in 2004, including nine in 160 at-bats for the Mariners. He was released after missing almost all of 2005 with a knee injury but says he's healthy and ready to get his career back on track. Didn't he notice the White Sox have Paul Konerko, Jim Thome and home-grown prospect Casey Rogowski at his position? "The reality is that the guys starting in front of him are All-Stars," said Joe Speed, Jacobsen's agent. "This is an opportunity for Bucky to go to spring training, play as hard as he can and try to work his way back to the big leagues." Davis has played parts of the last four seasons with the Pirates and Nationals but hit only .179 in 67 games. Gomes, a pitcher-turned-outfielder, was given second-round money to sign with the White Sox last winter. "This guy has a world of ability," farm director Dave Wilder said. "He doesn't have a lot of experience, especially as a hitter, but that's why he was available in the first place. He looks like a special kid."
