anyone have any reports on Honel?  I'm interested to hear how he is doing...

When I talked to him last year he said he felt really good, and was actually pretty dominant for two months. He faltered late in the year, but I think he'll be fine. I could have sworn there was a blurb about him having Tommy John, but after doing a google search, I can't find anything on it. He should be 100% healthy.

He definitely had surgery, though it was reportedly not of the Tommy John variety. Don't count on him this year.

Some people here said he had tommy john, but than JD said he was working out and throwing (he knows his stuff), which tells me it was a lesser surgery.

There was an article in one of the south suburban papers this off-season that said it was shoulder related. TJ is elbow.

I think this year will show whether Honel will be a prospect for the Sox once again or not.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to agree with Jason's long time view on Honel and that is he's just not going to pan out.

As Cheat said, don't count on him this year. In fact, I'm not counting on him ever reaching the bigs with the Sox.

Another first round bust IMO.

Did a search.... it was a Mr. Rogers chat on BA...

I checked on Honel just the other day, because there has been some mystery about his health. Turns out he has had surgery to repair a partially torn ligament in his elbow and isn't expected back before about June of next year. He did not require Tommy John but did have medical issues, which in a way is almost good news. It gives him an explanation for his inability to stay on the mound in recent years, and could help his approach when he returns. Honel is one of those guys who, for whatever reason, had more velocity in high school than the pros, and in hindsight probably looks like an overdraft by the White Sox.

It was just a bad pick. He was really damn good in highschool but his stuff just didn't project. Awesome knuckle curve but didn't have much secondary stuff. Thats not the type of guy you take that early, imo.

I feel the same way about Broadway. I think both will be mistakes.

More velocity...NO...overhyped YES. I think Rogers was believing some of the hyped radar readings that a lot of prospect places use.

I remember BA was saying he was throwing as high as 94 in the minors his first year and the first time I saw him pitch (which was basically his rookie year), he never got past 90 and he was consistently in the upper 80's.

Thats not a problem, but you better be have pinpoint command of that fastball and knuckle curve. He had pretty good command at that time, but he made some sort of mechanical adjustment and than just SUCKED (I think that was 2 or 3 years ago now). It was when he went to AA and made like 1 appearance.
