Spring Training Advice?

sin city sox fan

Recommended Posts

I am heading down to Arizona next weekend to soak up the atmosphere of spring training with the World Champs! (It still feels great to say that!)

I'll be hitting the the games Friday and Saturday in Tucson....than heading north for "away" games on Sunday and Monday.

I already have my tickets for the games and that part of the itinerary is obviously set. However, I have a few questions that I'm hoping people might be able to help out with....

1) Whats the schedule as far as workouts in Tucson? Do they practice before the games? And is this open to the public? Also, does BP take place at TEP before games and if so, what time is this?

2) For the games in the Phoenix area, is there a standard schedule for road teams to get some work in? What time should I get to the stadiums in Surprise and Maryvale if I want to see the White Sox in action outside of the games?

3) While in Tucson, are there any bars / restaurants that White Sox players (and fans) tend to frequent? Also, any suggestions on places to visit in Phoenix?

4) Any good titty bars in Arizona? :headbang

Thanks in advance to anyone that can provide answers....Go Sox!

Titty Bar? I'd never heard it put that way before.

Does this mean I could see the Sox take BP at the games up north?  Is that standard procedure throughout the cactus league?  If so, what's a good time to catch that?

Sin I will be there as well. I am coming in on saturday of next week and will attend the brewers away game on Sunday then back to tucson. I go every year. I stay in the catalinas and hang out around there, but there are good bars in tucson. A few:

The shanty- great patio- pretty crowded, probably one of the better bars.

O'Malleys- Good bar- lots of tv's and music.

Frog and firkin- English pub

Nimbus brewery- Micro brew pub

The Shelter- Cool bar the place was a former bomb shelter.

Wildcat house- College bar. Drink as much and puke on the floor bar.

Personally I will be at the flying V bar at the ventanna canyon resort. Where rich good looking women hang out!

Love the Flying V bar, no question, that's where the 35 yr. old hotties hang out.

Also try Bob Dobb's on 6th St., ask anyone and they will know it. College bar to slightly older crowd, I have seen players in there. Gentle Ben's is a terrific brewpub across the street from Frog and Firkin, both are on University just steps away from the main entrance of Univ. of Arizona. Both have good happy hours, both normal and reverse.

The Shanty is the oldest bar in Tucson pretty much. Established in 1937, on 4th Ave. which is where to hang out if you are a younger guy. I love The Shanty and so does my dad. The patio is terrific and there is a big lemon tree growing right in the middle, we even picked a few lemons. Maloney's is the dance club bar across the street, tons of hot chicks and they have a movie theme. The music will be playing and all of a sudden it stops and they start playing a clip from a movie. Great stuff, for example they will stop the music and then you see Godfather with Clemenza saying "Leave the gun, take the canoli's" or the fast food scene from Super Troopers. There are always ballplayers in Maloney's. Next door is O'Malley's as Quick mentions.

If you are in your 20's just go up and down 4th Ave. and you will find plenty of places to go.

Nimbus Brewing is near the ballpark www.nimbusbeer.com and it's an excellent place to warm up in the bullpen so to speak before games. After the games it's time for their happy hour, but if Bud Light or Miller Lite is your idea of a great beer, don't go. If you have a different type of palate, try their blonde ale called Dirty Guera (Dirty Blonde) or their Wit beer if it's on the menu. They have popcorn, peanuts, and munchies there but make sure you print their map off their website, it can be tricky to find, it's in an industrial complex.

By the way there are strip clubs out on Speedway, which is the main drag east/west. I have never been in but have talked to guys who have, if you like hanging around sleazenoids and that's your thing, go ahead but I never feel unsafe almost anywhere and I wouldn't go in based on what I was told ... but that's me.

There are two casinos out by the airport if you like to gamble.

The Shelter as quick mentions is a college bar with cheap beer and yes it's an interesting joint.

Have the pizza at Frog and Firken, it's great and the waitresses are really good, both in terms of doing their job and their appearance.

Now you know.

I live in Surprise, and if you show up an hour or so before gametime, you will get some good autographs. Surprise is a smaller stadium then the others, so you're pretty much on top of the action.

As for Titty bars, well you'd have to go to the ones near downtown Phoenix for that. there's a stretch of them off University Ave, on the way to the airport. There's also some off of Van Buren closer to the city limits.

Hope this helps.

Or maybe im blind and you never left idonno.

Seriously, he has a wealth of info when it comes to away games or ST. I appreciate both Quick and Jim's comments here, that was very helpful to me especially.

DO NOT TAKE BELL ROAD out to Surprise!!!!!! From where I live...I shoot out Olive (Dunlap) and up Litchfield. You'll shoot yourself in the head if you take Bell!

As for Titty Bars...I used to go to Centerfolds (cheap and nice women)...19th Ave & Peoria.

Grab a New Times when ya get there (at any Circle K) and look in the back though for a complete list.

We have a bunch of AZ folks on Soxtalk.  I lived in Scottsdale on E. Bell Rd up on the TPC for about 2 years back in 2003-04.  Is Scottsdale still growing like crazy?

The whole place is. Houses won't be too far from Lake Pleasant pretty soon. Hasn't rained for 5 months either!...was no snow skiing this year AT ALL!

For Winnin'Ugly...nice friggin commute!...at least your house went up $100+K in a year! I would shoot myself during that drive! Can't say I feel your pain...I've worked from home the last couple of years!!! It's ok out here...too f***in hot though for TOO long!

Rock buy now, houses is rising fast. Too fast.

I saw that last time I was visiting. I will be there next week as well. Of course I just bought real estate in 60607, which was a pretty penny in itself.

Actually they're coming down a little and the new housing is getting a little easier. It's swung to a buyers market right now instead of that clusterf*** that's been going on where investors turned this market crazy. Right now...you've got room to negotiate and houses are staying on the market for a while...as opposed to 6-8 months ago where a house was gone the first day it was listed (and WAY overpriced). Glad I bought when I did...my house went up about $115K in a year.

Rock...you say you like it now...come august when you burn yer ass on your leather seats for the 50th time you'll change your tune. If you haven't been out here for a whole summer...here's a test that'll show you how it feels. Preheat your oven to 450º...after preheated...open the door and stick your face right in your oven! 2 musts: garage or covered parking...and a pool...if not...yer f***ed!

I wish the Sox would move up here at some point. Sucks they're not interleague out here this year either. Hey...the Bears will be here this fall at the new stadium!! :headbang

Once again....I appreciate all the advice on bars / restaurants. Is there a good sports bar in the area though? I'm looking for a decent place to watch the NCAA tournament when I'm not at TEP (a place close to the park would be nice so I could watch most of the Salukis game on Friday before seeing the Sox whoop the Rangers!). Would O'Malleys or Nimbus be a good option for this? Thanks again for all the tips!

O'Malley's would be a good choice, not Nimbus though.

The best sport bar(s) in Tucson is a local chain called Risky Business, they have several locations. Great happy hour, good food, lively, and lots of big TV's. There is one out on the east side which is great.

Here's an overview from the Do Tucson website:

http://www.dotucson.com/night.asp?qry=703

Risky Business also has their own website:

www.riskybusinesstucson.com

A note on Nimbus: This is a great place to have a beer before the game or hit their happy hour right afterwards. Pretty sure it's www.nimbusbeer.com . You will need to print off the map from their website, it's about 8-10 mins. max from the ballpark and is the closest place near the park that you want to go into.

You can sit and look out at the mountains, watch the fighter jets taking off from Davis-Monahan, and drink the local beer. It gets lively for their happy hour which starts at 4 p.m., drink prices are reduced a bit. Lots of locals hang there, it is a nice relaxing place. Highly recommended if you want to experience a bit of real Tucson and are ok with venturing away from the chain places.

I did find this place.....

http://www.famoussams.net/locations/store.asp?Store=42

Anyone familiar with Famous Sams?

Yes, you won't go wrong there.

I like the three Risky Business locations better, they are IMO a bit cleaner, better scenery, food is a bit better. But it all depends where you're staying and which one is closer.

Famous Sam's is just fine, they have multiple locations.
