Example 38 billion why I love sports, only sports can produce a picture like this (this picture is to this year's tournament what the McClellan one from the Arizona/Illinois game was to last years):

 

 

Class move by Afflalo and UCLA after the game last night I noticed, they did their celebrating but they also seemed to try and console and congratulate Morrison and Gonzaga on a great game. Actually, here's a quote on it I found:

 

Hollins and Afflalo went to help up Morrison, who was spread on the floor at midcourt. Few then came to hug the crying Morrison.

 

"That's just a sign of a great program and great people," Morrison said. "They had enough guts as a man in their moment of victory to pick another man up off the floor. That's more than basketball and I would thank them if I could."

Both are great pictures imo. Afflalo did a very classy thing going over to Morrison like that. In the end, that's what sports is all about, competing for fun, and then congratulating each other afterwords. All of us sports nuts usually think that winning is the only option and quite frankly in a competitive environment it is. I guess I just need to remember that it's only a game and 64 out of the 65 teams are going to lose. The second picture that has Morrison on it shows how much he really wanted it. I'm trying to think of a scenario that's worse than controlling the game and being up the whole game and then to lose it in the last 10 seconds, I probably need some help thinking about a worse scenario since all I can still think about is last night.

That's why I love pics like that, they show it's about more than winning and losing. Obviously it shows the joy of victory and agony of defeat, but you see the human element and how sports are about the emotion and the passion that it puts into people. Gonzaga I must admit was a lot better than I thought, if you give them a more athletic point guard they are a final 4 team.

What I was saying is that being up the whole game and being up big and right at the end losing it has to be one of the worst feelings in sports. I'm not saying this was the worst outcome because it's not, there have been worse, lol not many but there have been.

Yeah it's true, my favorite picture of all time is with on of my favorite athletes of all time, Derrick Thomas sitting in the rain during a during a Sunday Night football game with Seattle. (I think it was Sunday Night.)

 

Anyways concerning Morrison, I'm sure all of us think he'll be going pro so we'll have to wait and see if/when that becomes official. I would just hate to lose like that just like anyone else, but time will tell I guess.

Morrison is a lock top 5 pick, more likely a lock top 3 pick. And unlike Leinart in the USC machine, his stock could actually go down next year. He's going pro and would be an idiot not to. BTW, Derrick Thomas was the s***. I was only 13 or 14 when he died, but it was a sad day.

 

Anyways, any thoughts on Memphis/UCLA? I think Memphis might just run UCLA out of the gym, the Bruins better make this a slooooooooow game because they don't have the firepower to run with Memphis.

Yeah I'm a Chiefs fan and I cried and cried that day, I was 14 when he died also. I gotta go with Memphis, they are impressing me in this tournament. I just don't see UCLA being able to shut them down.

The ironic part of this (at least for a Gonzaga hater like me) is that Gonzaga would have been a much tougher matchup IMO for Memphis. Gonzaga has a lot more offensive firepower and has the type of dominant post player in Batista that can give Memphis hell. The one thing UCLA does have on it's side is Farmar is a far far superior point guard to Raivio, and is a very good one in general. UCLA also defense a lot better than Gonzaga, but as you saw through most of last nights game, great offensive teams can score on UCLA (I believe Memphis scored over 80 on them earlier this year, and Washington beat UCLA twice).

The fact that the media fawns over them even though they are never all that good and don't play defense. This years teams is probably the best team they've had other than the 1999 team that made the elite 8, and they didn't even survive their opener in the regionals. At least make a final four before I have to hear how awesome you are.

I'm pretty sure it was the same PBP guy for both games. I hate how he just screams whenever someone takes a shot in the last few minutes of a ballgame. I think he was one of those kids that never "got" microphones. And God forbid, if the shot actually goes in, mute your television for the next few seconds.

Gus is a complete and total f***, but at the same time I forgot about that one. It was a game that meant nothing, no matter how much Illini fans say otherwise. If we win that game and lose to UNC in the title games, it makes no difference how I look back at last year. All that mattered at that point since we had the #1 overall and bus tour locked up was winning the 6 in the big tournament.

My most hated college athlete of all time is Mateen Cleaves. He was a average college player who just dribbled down the floor and passed it off to his amazingly awesome supporting cast. But since he was a leader and made wide open 3's that I could make, he's a "great". I cannot stand that, and the worst part was he had little talent and played his ass off with hustle. He was like an annoying white guy, but nobody wanted to hate him since he wasn't white. I coulda played point guard on those MSU teams with the talent they had.

Incorrect. Because you didn't know how a team would respond to the loss the rest of the way, i would have rather kept the momentum going. That's why it mattered. Luckily, they rebounded nicely in the BTT and kept going from there. But initially, i think people had a reason to worry a bit, you know.

You had a reason to worry a bit because it was a loss and we played like s***. There was no extra reason to worry or be pissed since it was our first loss. And if they had fallen apart because of a loss in a meaningless game, it would have proven they didn't have the mental toughness to do anything in the tournament anyways. The Illini did recover well though.

Duke needs to recruit more athletes.  Go ahead and call me racist for saying they aren't black enough, but they simply aren't athletic.  Even guys like Dockery and Williams are average athletes.  DeMarcus Nelson is a very good athlete and they have Henderson coming in next year, they just need to get more athletic.  It was really exposed in the Georgetown and UNC at Cameron games and was again tonight.

 

 

Until Duke recruits athletic wings, they are going to have issues.  Just recruiting small guards that shoot 3's and aren't plus athletes and giant guys who play inside, they need some wings/big guards.  They are too slow and too white and have no 3's (by that I mean small forwards/big 2 guards), and you can't win that way, you must be more versatile.

Roy Williams should thank Doherty, as he took his roster full of players and added 1 damn good recruit in Marvin Williams and won it all.  Now Roy is starting to recruit like he did at Kansas (too many crackers) and he's going to continue to underachieve in the tournament (like this year losing a 3-11 game as a 3).  Go ahead, call me racist, but the facts say that I'm right.  There are great white players out there (Hansbrough now, Hinrich and Collison in the past) that Roy gets, but he just recruits wayyyy too many whiteys and ends up stuck with a lot of them who were WAY WAY overrated in HS (Bobby Frasor anyone?)
