Milkman delivers
Didn't Jenks and Cotts both skip AAA? I know it's a stretch that someone could also skip AA, but it still gives me hope.
SSH2005
Logan worked quickly this afternoon against a predominantly minor league lineup. Either today was played by a contingent of fringe talent, or this year's Rockies club is experiencing an astounding turnover. Difficult to judge anything from his 1.2IP other than his arsenal (which Cheat accuraely assessed) and composure. Didn't appear wide eyed. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Logan pitch Friday against Texas. Guillen should place him in situations to fail. Test him against legitimate talent. Beyond that, there's one other date which is important--next Saturday, against San Francisco. I want Boone pitching to Bonds. It may not happen if our starter pitches deep, but I'd like to observe him against the most imposing LH in the game. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Agreed, throw him against really good lefties. Afterall, those are the guys we will have to count on him to get out if he makes the roster. Didn't Jenks and Cotts both skip AAA? I know it's a stretch that someone could also skip AA, but it still gives me hope. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Jenks pitched in A, AA, and AAA as a starter with the Angels but only AA as a closer with the Sox. Cotts pitched in A with the Athletics and only AA with the Sox. Scott Radinsky is the last guy I can think of who went straight from A to the Sox. jphat007
Logan got E Chavez out. That's better than what most of the pitchers on this staff can do. He retired 6 of 8 A's regulars which is like some kind of milestone for this team. Edited March 16, 2006 by jphat007

I hope he keeps it up though.
jphat007
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 15, 2006 -> 09:39 PM) That was sweet but the sample size is still obviously too small (4.2 IP) to judge and he isn't striking guys out which would be nice to see. I hope he keeps it up though. Well obviously. But we're aren't going to get nearly a big enough sample size this spring to be able to tell how he will do in the regular season. He could dominate and then get lit up. I don't think we'll need to use him a ton in big situations during the regular season. I mean, he'll get a few here and there like Marte did, but if he can get an occasional lefty out, not a bad option. I don't know if we'll see enough this spring to determine what he might do in the regular season. Ozzie will just have to go on his gut feel and hope it works. I'm fine with either him or Lopez though. Who knows. He could give up 8 runs in his next outing never to be heard from again. PS. does anybody ahve Cotts righty/lefty splits (avg.) available? I'm some kinda lazy. lol Edited March 16, 2006 by jphat007
maggsmaggs
Also, Vladimir Nunez pitched today and looked good. I had no idea the Sox signed him. He had some good major league years and might be an acceptable fill-in for Hermy for a month.

SSH2005
More on Boone Logan... http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines Guillen likes Logan for bullpen opening By Dave van Dyck Tribune staff reporter March 15, 2006, 9:44 PM CST TUCSON, Ariz.—Obscure left-hander Boone Logan appears to have a bullpen spot sewn up after allowing one hit in 12/3 innings Wednesday against Colorado to run his scoreless streak this spring to 42/3 innings. "I like what I see," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I'm not afraid to take him [on the roster]." Logan, a 20th-round draft choice in 2002, began three straight minor-league seasons at the rookie-league level and appeared in just four games at Class A at the end of last summer. The positive change for him came in the middle of last year when he dropped his arm angle more to sidearm. "They had to do something pretty quick with me," he said. "It was my third year in rookie ball. Ever since then, I've taken off. It's kind of weird. People think you drop your arm angle down a little and you lose accuracy, but it has been the opposite for me. "My first couple of years were pretty rough. I led the league in walks and hit batters, so they had to do something with me." In his first season, he walked 31 and hit 11 in just 67 innings. He followed that with 31 walks and four hit batters in 641/3 innings. This spring, in a big-league tryout, he has walked one batter. "I know I could handle it," he said. "The way you're seeing me pitch now is pretty much the way you're going to be seeing it most of the time. I know I can handle the role, for sure." Nervous? "My first outing I was excited," he said. "But nervous, I don't even know what that means."
southsideirish71
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 15, 2006 -> 10:39 PM) More on Boone Logan... http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines Very confident, which is something you need from a reliever. The only thing I want to see now is how he responds after he has a bad outing. How does he rebound, does his confidence span and he has a short memory on setbacks, or does it linger. That is the only major question left.
Whitewashed in '05
This is his chance to make it. 3 seasons in rookie ball, if he doesn't take advantage now he might not get the chance again. Especially if KW swings a deal or two. I am rooting for him and Lopez...or whoever the f*** steps it up cause we need them now.
Whitewashed in '05
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 15, 2006 -> 11:27 PM) If Kenny can swing a deal to bring a vet in here that we can count on for 50+ innings, and post a 3.40-3.70 ERA, I have NO PROBLEM with giving Logan a fair shot in the Sox pen. I just dont think the Sox can get away with Lopez AND Logan in the pen at the same time... This might make you happy tony...whats Koch doing right now?? If AJ and him can coexist maybe AJ can make him a better pitcher.
Whitewashed in '05
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 15, 2006 -> 11:32 PM) Koch is still trying to get all the roids out of his system. BTW, we won the Koch deal by a landslide. Keith Foulke for Billy Koch and some minor league kid named Cotts or something..... but we lost Johnson and Valentine!! Wanne
QUOTE(RME JICO @ Mar 15, 2006 -> 01:43 AM) Might as well give him a shot. If hitters have never seen him before, and there is not much info on him, he could get away with some pitches. I would still rather have a proven vet or a player that doesn't make the cut and is out of options like Gload/Borch. s***...those pitchers always seem to work pretty damn well against the Sox. Flash Tizzle
Yeah, so when Boone earns a roster position and DOMINATES major league competition I'm creating a new fan group: The Boone-Dock Saints. Even though I'm the only person (it seems) whom dislikes the movie, the play on words works well. Anyone steals this from me, and the punishment will be EPIC. TLAK
If the kid keeps getting guys out, who cares about his experience. This isn't Strat-o-matic baseball where you spin a wheel based on a player's past stats. You pick the guys you think can help you today. Picture Logan in Cott's 2004 role. Ozzie picked his spots with care, usually only one or two guys he thought he could handle, and got a lot of mileage out of him while he was maturing.
