Athletics sign Juan Gonzalez, not Red Sox

Even though his contract with the Red Sox was reported final, Juan Gonzalez is reportedly set to sign a minor league deal with the Athletics.

There wasn't going to be any room for Gonzalez in Boston following the Wily Mo Pena addition. He was expected to open the season in Triple-A even before the trade. Things aren't going to be much better for him in Oakland, at least not while Frank Thomas is healthy. Though he'll probably start off at Oakland's Triple-A Sacramento affiliate, his return to the majors may come with yet another team.

Frank Thomas and Juan Gone in the same lineup? That would be cool to see. The A's are trying to bring back the great right-handed hitters of the 90's.

According to this Puerto Rican newspaper, Juan Gone first signed with the Red Sox a few days ago.  Now they are saying that he signed with the A's.  But apparently, he hasn't signed with either team.

Maybe he pulled a muscle picking up a pen.

Gonzalez darns Sox while jumping to A’s

By Jeff Horrigan/ Red Sox Notebook

Thursday, March 23, 2006 - Updated: 09:42 AM EST

TAMPA - Juan Gonzalez reached an agreement in principle on a minor league contract last weekend to join the Red Sox, but the team isn’t raising a stink about his sudden decision to instead join the Oakland A’s.

Gonzalez was intended to arrive in Fort Myers Tuesday but apparently had second thoughts after learning the Red Sox acquired power-hitting outfielder Wily Mo Pena the previous day from the Cincinnati Reds. The 36-year-old Gonzalez simply pulled a no-show, never informing the team nor his representatives of his plans.

Gonzalez, who has hit 434 career home runs, has been limited to only 35 games over the last two seasons due to back and leg injuries. He lasted only one game for the Cleveland Indians in 2005 before a hamstring injury sidelined him for the rest of the year.

By quickly agreeing to terms on a minor league deal with the A’s, the two-time former American League MVP will serve as an insurance policy for oft-injured designated hitter Frank Thomas, who signed with Oakland after 16 seasons with the Chicago White Sox.

“I never saw him show up, so he’s probably gone,” Sox manager Terry Francona said prior to last night’s 5-4 loss to the Yankees at Legends Field. “From his point of view, I’m sure once we got Wily Mo, he probably thought this was not the place to be.”

The Boston Herald is now reporting that the minor league deal between Juan Gonzalez and the A's was a "figment of his imagination."

A's officials reportedly said they have no interest in Gonzalez, who never even arrived at Red Sox camp. This story just keeps getting weirder.

Juan Gonzalez, who has already struck an apparent deal with the Red Sox and fictional deal with the A's this spring, is now trying out for the Rockies.

If the Rockies wanted nothing to do with Sammy Sosa, Gonzalez doesn't look like much of a fit. Still, with Ryan Shealy no longer an option, someone is needed to act as Brad Hawpe's platoonmate. It should be Eli Marrero's job as things stand now.
