Heads22
The following is a statement by University of Iowa President David Skorton and UI Director of Athletics Robert Bowlsby: "Late yesterday we learned of allegations that as many as five University of Iowa football players may have received preferential treatment in obtaining merchandise from an employee of an area cell phone services provider, perhaps in exchange for tickets to the 2006 Outback Bowl. "The allegations must be and will be treated with the utmost seriousness. We will move expeditiously to learn the facts of the situation so that the university and athletics department can determine the appropriate course of action. "To accomplish that, the university's Office of the General Counsel, in collaboration with the athletics department, will investigate this matter and develop as full an accounting of the facts as possible. The initial investigation will be completed as soon as possible, but within 30 days. "The University of Iowa takes great pride in its athletic programs and will do everything possible to assure that this process reflects our commitment to the highest levels of excellence and integrity." Soxbadger
A very similar thing happened at Wisconsin with a store called the Shoebox, although not sure if tickets were involved or just getting merchandise free. Anyways I think a couple of game suspensions came down, nothing to major. It was pretty funny though as the football players would walk around wearing t-shirts that said "Shoebox" and talking about how they were getting shoes etc for free. Most of the time these things are not very discrete.
Gene Honda Civic
This is so dumb... When you go to a bowl game you get a goody bag full of s***, (iPods, watches, portable DVD players, etc) but that's not illegal. Talk about ambiguously enforced rules. BabyJesus69
it's not immature to refer to people as what they are did i start a new thread last week when wayne morgan/isu's problems came out? has a head coach at the university of iowa ever taken time during his introduction to discuss iowa state? the inferiority complex doesn't puzzle me, nor does it irritate me; it just makes me laugh. It's not like I singled out Iowa's problems.....I do the same with ISU. Ask any ISU fan....and they'd tell you they would have much rather beat any Big 12 game they lost this year and would gladly have lost to Iowa for it. The superiority complex by Hawk fans, however, is a constant annoyance. And why, exactly, are we Clowns?

If memory serves, ISU has beaten up Iowa pretty well in both basketball and football, more games than not, in the last decade or more. I'm getting lectured by a Hawkeye fan about the bball season peaking early. I do believe the ISU-Kansas basketball games were voted the biggest rivalry on ESPN SportsNation. And why would we have an inferiority complex to Iowa in athletics? We've been faring quite well, head-to-head. And don't even get me started on the dirtiness of college football programs. I've had friends who have alledgedly seen Drew Tate being handed assignments for his classes in the library. I have no idea how half the football players here pass. It's called D-1 football. I think you'll see with the hiring of Pollard a much bigger emphasis on the conference season in sports. That's why the Colorado football game was the most exciting game of the year last year. Anyone who went to both that and the Iowa game is lying if they said otherwise.

Maybe it did, but I wouldn't consider it one of the five best rivalries in college basketball. The top two that come to mind for me are: UNC - Duke IU - Kentucky

A win at Phog Allen is at least 17 times more satisfying than one at Carver Hawkeye. Football's different, because we were so bad for so long, and because Iowa dominated us for so long, it's more like retribution. The two sports are different beasts. Then there's wrestling. greasywheels121
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 03:55 PM) The players should get free stuff considering how much money they bring the school and those stores anyway. It's a double-edged sword. The schools exploit the players. But the players exploit the schools with the scholarship and all that comes with that, and they're using the school to boost their draft status with the exposure, etc.

Scratching my head here.... How in the hell do the players bring money to cell phone stores? Not sure how a player playing for a school should entitle them to free or discounted cell phones or accessories. Educate me. They get the opportunity for a free college degree from a major university (which might be worth over 100k), which is the key to career success (worth a lot more than 100k) for most people in this country. Plus all sorts of other benefits from the school. They get plenty.
Reddy
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 09:33 PM) Or since 2004. aw snap! i'm a hawkeye fan but you dun made him look foolish! nah but seriously the superiority thing really comes out of the fact that we HAVE had more success in recent years than ISU has - not necessarily AGAINST ISU but in the big picture. now i'm not gonna flame against ISU like some other people on here cuz i've got friends there and frankly i've got nothing against ISU. The only time i worry about them is when Iowa plays them. And that's usually the way the majority of Iowa and ISU fans think (vice versa for ISU fans) again, like in everything, it's the outspoken minority that brings the bad rap - on both sides.
