redandwhite
Choi has options left and will begin the year at Pawtucket. Gordon Edes, a Red Sox beatwriter, has been mocking Snow's bat speed all spring saying that he looks better at the plate than J.T. himself does. Snow might turnout to be a pretty poor signing with Choi being the much better offensive option at a much cheaper rate. The Red Sox bench might be changing relatively often this summer. SSH2005
Jeez, the Dodgers are really stupid then. Why the heck didn't they just send Hee-Seop Choi down to AAA, let him raise his trade value there, and use him as tradebait at the deadline? I can see why the Red Sox picked him up though. They haven't had much power from the 1B position in sometime and neither Youkilis nor Snow have much, if any. Choi at least has some power potential. redandwhite
Are there not similarities between this waiver claim and the Ortiz signing?
SSH2005
Are there not similarities between this waiver claim and the Ortiz signing? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ortiz had an .839 OPS, 20 HR, 75 RBI season with the Twins before the Red Sox picked him up. Choi had a good season in 2004 but still has massive holes in his swing and can't hit lefties worth a damn. Ortiz can still hit lefties a bit. I just don't see Choi becoming the hitter that Ortiz is today. I see Choi as a good platoon first baseman at best. If he does become the next Ortiz, I will be shocked and amazed. I just don't see it. redandwhite
Just wanted to fix my original comment from last night. In today's Globe, it said that because he has only a certain number of options left that he will have to pass through irrevocable waivers before he can be sent outright to Pawtucket. A real interesting note if you ask me. Sometimes players sneak through waivers, and this appears to be one of those instances. I'll be shocked if Choi isn't claimed by another team even if the Globe seems to think differently.
