SSH2005
http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sportsstory.asp?id=171030 Jenks says off-season training was flawed By Scot Gregor Daily Herald Sports Writer Posted Sunday, March 26, 2006 TUCSON, Ariz. — For much of spring training, White Sox manager Guillen has been taking measured shots at closer Bobby Jenks. Reporting to camp out of shape and struggling to throw strikes in the Cactus League, Jenks has been put on alert by Guillen more than once. The message has been the same each time: Last year’s success means nothing in 2006. Before pitching 3 innings in a minor-league game Saturday, Jenks admitted he didn’t train right during the off-season. “The problem was that I didn’t do enough conditioning,’’ said the 25-year-old reliever. “I was in the gym every other day, putting on strength and muscle. “But the fact that I came in a little heavier because of that, and not doing conditioning, the way I’ve been pitching, it looks like I’ve tightened up and I’m kind of out of shape. “What I’ve done now is the complete opposite of what I’ve done this off-season. Straight cardio and light lifting, so it’s the opposite of what I should have done.’’ Guillen has called Jenks “fat’’ several times this spring, but the young pitcher has taken it as constructive criticism. “He’s reassuring me to make sure I’m watching my p’s and q’s,’’ Jenks said. “I’m going to get scrutinized a little bit with the way things have been going during spring training, but it’s something I know I have to take.’’ Edited March 26, 2006 by SSH2005

Dick Allen
Why would a guy who throws 100 mph all of a sudden start heavy weightlifting? Hopefully the Sox will do a better job of monitoring him next off season.
SkokieSox
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 26, 2006 -> 03:56 PM) Why would a guy who throws 100 mph all of a sudden start heavy weightlifting? Hopefully the Sox will do a better job of monitoring him next off season. So he can throw 115 mph silly.
