I would much rather have Thome than Thomas, considering salary and the trade.  Thomes a better guy to have around, is less of an injury risk, and will do better than Frank this year (prediction)

although I love Frank and hes the greatest white sox in my life time (if not ever)

Let me break down why I disagree.

 

Gio Gonzalez and Dan Haigwood have the potential to be studs. We might have thrown away a big part of our future.

Rowand could have been trade bait in another form

The 7 mil spent on Thome could have been spent in a different form. (maybe making it easier to lock Mark B up) also could have signed Erubiel Durazo at the 4.5 he got.

 

 

So if you think Im crazy to like:

Frank,Gonzalez,Haigwood, Rowand, FA signing over Thome

 

Then we will agree to disagree.

Erubiel Durazo accepted a minor league deal with the Rangers but was released a week or two ago. If we were depending on Durazo instead of Thome as our DH, our lineup would be a lot weaker right now.

that may have been a bad example, fact is we would have had nearly 7 mil to spend on someone else.

Frank was grimmacing a lot last night. He's hoping to play 100 games this year, and I don't think he will make it. Thome is a guy who potentially could hit 50 homers, is left handed, something the Sox need, and draws a lot of walks, something else the Sox need, not to mention he is considered the best teammate in MLB. Rowand is a good player, not a great one, and the Sox strength in their minor league system is outfielders. Anderson can be a good player. He will be adequate this season and a year or 2 from now is likely to be just as good or better than Rowand. Gio and Haigwood, especially Gio to me, were tough to let go, but we have seen so many lower level studs turn to crap its well worth the gamble to me. Give KW credit for having the balls to make the moves. It would have been easy to sit back and do nothing with a world championship under his belt. We waited for minor leaguers refusing to trade them for known commodities under Ron Schueler, and we received performances from Scott Ruffcorn, James Baldwin, Rod Bolton, etc. that were very forgetable.

1) Robots = A sizeable group of posters who spew the same word for word Thome>Thomas nonsense over and over and over and over again, as if it needed to be said for like the millionth time. I didn't say that everyone on soxtalk is a robot. I said that there are a bunch of robots on soxtalk. Get it?

 

2) I'd rather have Thome than Frank at this point. When did I ever indicate otherwise? I know that Frank can't stay healthy. That doesn't mean that it should be reiterated a million f***ing times.

The days of the 50 HR mang are long gone, dicky baby.

 

He has the potential to duke it out with Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Mark Teixera, and Chris Shelton for the AL HR crown, though.

I would be more inclined to say that the days of the 60 HR guys are long gone more than the 50 HR guy. Andruw Jones hit 51 last year, so it is still on the radar a bit. I definitely think that 50 HR is once again a very tough bench mark to reach, and no longer something that guys like Brady Anderson can just get on a good year(cough supplements cough).

 

But a 50 HR season is only going to be accomplished anymore by upper echelon players.

 

on a side note, looking at the HR totals throughout the last 15 years on this page, the "steroid era" in the late 90's really pops out at you.

I agree with that completely. Baseball fans are going to have to deprogram themselves of the 50 HR benchmark, because it isnt easy like it was 5-8 years ago. 50 HR just went back to being the exception.

 

And Andruw Jones is just a freak if you ask me. I wish that KW would have pulled the trigger for Maggs back in the day, but hindsight is 20/20.

Good for Frank last night. I hope that he can manage those 100 games in Oakland and eventually makes it to 500 HRs. But his time in Chicago was over. The Sox are better off with a more-likely-to-be-healthy Thome who is also a much better clubhouse guy.

 

Randy Johnson looks like a shell of his former self. Fastball topping out at 93? Ouch. He's still effective, but he isn't going to dominate games anymore.
