Heads22
CycloneFanatic.com reports that Douglas stepped down all of a sudden. I'd like Steve to chime in, but he's been an awesome recruiter and it shouldn't hurt the program.
BabyJesus69
lol, iowa fires zalesky....isu gets petrified of getting 'Gabled' again....douglas 'steps down' a few hours later....sanderson is new isu coach
Heads22
Sanderson was annointed the next coach by Pollard a few weeks ago....stating something to the effect of "we won't let him leave Ames"
SuperSteve
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Mar 29, 2006 -> 07:50 PM) I'd like Steve to chime in... They had to. College wrestling head coaching positions are in shambles right now. Ohio State fired Hellickson last week. Eastern Michigan just hired themselves a new coach. Now Iowa and Iowa State. Sanderson was going to be the coach in time, so it's only sooner. There is talk of Tom Brands all over, I guess it's his Iowa job if he wants it. What does he do. He has Metcalf (super-duper blue chip recruit) coming out of redshirt next year at Virgina Tech, we're he is building a solid team and they're commited to the program building facilities. I want to see Brands stay at VT. Now I could see Terry Brands leave University Tennessee-Chattanooga for Iowa. He has a decent squad over there with both Keefes returning and Koz coming. So who really knows. Tom Ryan of Hofstra may end up at Ohio State. When I wrestled at State, our coach had a lot of heat. I remember one of the meetings where he got his vote of confidence from Mason (our AD). The stuff really does erk teams.

Heads22
Iowa still needs to pass ISU. Then again, ISU doesn't focus as much in state as of late. Let's see if State's #1 recruiting class can actually produce. The team's been a letdown lately and the class didn't produce right away. I'm pretty damn sure at least one member is transferring to Arizona State....I have class with him and talk with him some.....but it'll be cool if Iowa and Iowa State could duke it out for #1 and #2 again. I'll admit it though....Iowa's history is a .bit. better. 1928 Oklahoma St. 1929 Oklahoma St. 1930 Oklahoma St. 1931 Oklahoma St. 1932 Indiana 1933 Iowa St. Oklahoma St. 1934 Oklahoma St. 1935 Oklahoma St. 1936 Oklahoma 1937 Oklahoma St. 1938 Oklahoma St. 1939 Oklahoma St. 1940 Oklahoma St. 1941 Oklahoma St. 1942 Oklahoma St. 1946 Oklahoma St. 1947 Cornell College 1948 Oklahoma St. 1949 Oklahoma St. 1950 Northern Iowa 1951 Oklahoma 1952 Oklahoma 1953 Penn St. 1954 Oklahoma St. 1955 Oklahoma St. 1956 Oklahoma St. 1957 Oklahoma 1958 Oklahoma St. 1959 Oklahoma St. 1960 Oklahoma 1961 Oklahoma St. 1962 Oklahoma St. 1963 Oklahoma 1964 Oklahoma St. 1965 Iowa St. 1966 Oklahoma St. 1967 Michigan St. 1968 Oklahoma St. 1969 Iowa St. 1970 Iowa St. 1971 Oklahoma St. 1972 Iowa St. 1973 Iowa St. 1974 Oklahoma 1975 Iowa 1976 Iowa 1977 Iowa St. 1978 Iowa 1979 Iowa 1980 Iowa 1981 Iowa 1982 Iowa 1983 Iowa 1984 Iowa 1985 Iowa 1986 Iowa 1987 Iowa St. 1988 Arizona St. 1989 Oklahoma St. 1990 Oklahoma St. 1991 Iowa 1992 Iowa 1993 Iowa 1994 Oklahoma St. 1995 Iowa 1996 Iowa 1997 Iowa 1998 Iowa 1999 Iowa 2000 Iowa 2001 Minnesota 2002 Minnesota 2003 Oklahoma St. 2004 Oklahoma St. 2005 Oklahoma St.

Heads22
I meant in regards to recruiting. Our ass has been kicked. But it's cool to see a stretch where 28 out of 34 national championships were in the state of Iowa.

Hahahahahaha.... Tom Brands as an assitant coach even though he has one of the top recruiting classes coming out of redshirts including one of the three big guns in Metcalf. VT has made such a huge promise to the program. Gable won't be the coach. I don't think Tom Brands will. I mentioned Terry earlier. It's too early to tell. Tom also left to coach, why would he leave Metcalf and a head position to take on an assiatant position?

BabyJesus69
had the iowa job not opened up today, brands would be on his way to ohio state. therefore, the iowa job had to open up today, and it did. he's wanted the job for a long time, he's proven that he can recruit, and he's proven that he's ready to take the job. trust me, he's going to be coaching in iowa city for a long, long time. SuperSteve
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Mar 31, 2006 -> 05:06 PM) Anything new? All I'm reading is Brands rumors. Rumors: Brands has an interview at Iowa next week; Tom Ryan of Hofstra rumors all over for Ohio State, Tom Borelli of Central Michigan, also talk of a "major Big 10 and a major Big 12 coaches" in the mix; Zalesky is on the short list of Oregon State candidates. J Robinson of Minnesota's remarks on Iowa: "I think Iowa wanted Sanderson and that prompted the firing of Zalesky and Douglass stepping down", said Robinson, whose team finished 2nd in the 2006 NCAA tournament for the 2nd time in the past four years. "Zalesky was a good coach, but this is a tough business. We have owned them for the past few years, and Oklahoma State has beat them soundly in Iowa City, every year. The fact that the elite Iowa high school kids are leaving the state tells you one of two things, either they don't want to wrestle for Iowa or they hate living in that god-awful state. I am inclined to believe it is the former, which is not good news for the Hawkeye faithful." J Robinson was a former assistant to legendary coach Dan Gable before taking over the reins for the Golden Gophers in 1985. "Iowa is a unique and special place to coach, but people in Iowa City seem to think it is their rite of passage to win the NCAA tournament every year. "They will probably bring Tom Brands in, but he has a tough job ahead of him". "Brands is a tough hombre", says Robinson, "but he has the personality of a doorknob, and kids may not respond to that". That they got away is an indictment of Zalesky.
SuperSteve
Okay, and now the truth for all this... Minnesota is the favorites next year. Dustin Schlatter and Cole Konrad are returning champs. Roger Kish is a returning finalist. CP Schlatter is a returning Big Ten champion. Mack Reiter is a top three 133 next year, 2x AA. Manuel Rivera is solid and top three at 141 graduate. Ness will be tough at 125. Minnesota is going to be the best. Oklahoma State loses Esposito, Rosholt, Mocco, and IIRC Ward. The Virginia Tech guys, really only Slaton at 133 and Metcalf at 149 have the chance to really come in next year and start (maybe LeClere if Tsirtis RS). They still need to get their releases, and sans any wording in the scholarship, VT might not let them leave, ie Mocco to Okie State compared to Fekete to Hofstra. Four said coming would be those three and Borshel. Metcalf is huge for them.
