Soxpranos
QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:33 AM) The organization also hated Kip Wells. Understood, just replying to the "total package" statement. Gio, has 4 quality pitches and a lefty, McCarthy 2 pitches with a change up that still in progress and he's he total package?

Gio, has 4 quality pitches and a lefty, McCarthy 2 pitches with a change up that still in progress and he's he total package? Yes, McCarthy showed last year that his stuff is good enough to dominate in the majors. Also, he has a much better frame for MLB success than Gio, who has yet to prove he can stay healthy. Kalapse
I'm also going to assume that Kip was not rushed out of AA ball, where he was never even able to throw a pitch in Charlotte before he hit the pros. And I highly doubt that Kip was able to match what BMac did in September of last year where he was mowing down very good teams and just making them look silly. Greg The Bull Luzinski
One thing that has not been considered is that Count is not the only tradable pitcher at this point if McCarthy is to be in the rotation at some point. If the Sox have their sights set on a trade, Freddy or Javy might be more attractive. Just a thought, not a suggestion.

Pretty damn good pitcher, yea hes hurt.. but look at Prior who has a better build than Mccarthy.. injury can happen to anyone.

They love Garcia as the big game pitcher and Javier's contract is only through 2007. They probably just plan on developing McCarthy out of the pen and want him to be truly ready to start. This pen thing is probably a 2 year deal.
southsider2k5
WOW. That's all I can say. WOW. Contreras at less than $10 mil a year is a HUGE steal. stupid bandwagon fans filling up the ballpark and letting us extend our pitchers

Hopefully for us he makes your prophecy come true.

Pedro was also throwing in the high 90's with a changeup that was better than anyone had seen in a long time. Pedro's pure stuff cannot be compared to Gio even if they do have the same frame. Hopefully for us he makes your prophecy come true. His second half ERA (when he came back up from AAA after fixing his delivery IIRC) was something along the lines of 1.69. Now, without looking at the numbers, I believe that was better than what Contreras did in the second half of last year, yet everyone here seems to think Contreras is a Cy Young candidate. ObamaKnowsBest
Someone's most likely to get traded. BMac has to stay the kid is a stud. We are completely stacked we don't even need to sign free agents. A bullpen arm if the young guys can't pull it out.
CWSGuy406
Hmm... this seems odd: Under terms of the extension, Contreras, who will make $8 million in 2005, now will be paid $9 million in 2007 and $10 million in 2008 and 2009. With Contreras' extension, each member of the club's current starting rotation is under contract through at least 2007. I assume the 'will make $8 million in 2005' is just a typo, but I'm still skeptical. Then again, I think -- they wouldn't f*** around with something like a contract extension, would they? Soxpranos
QUOTE(iWiN4PreP @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:41 AM) yes ba hit 2 homers of king felix Great analogy... Just like Jose Deleon turned out to better than Clemens in 86 when he handed him half his losses in face to face duels (2). 21-4 was clemens record. Hopefully for us he makes your prophecy come true. McCarthy had 6 quality starts last year out of 10. He also managed to give up a total of 7 ER over the course of his final 6 starts including two shutouts against Boston and Texas where he gave up a total of 5 hits combined in those two games with both of which being on the road. From what I saw from McCarthy last year, I don't want him going anywhere.

His original deal which runs out after this year was 4 years at $8 mil per. that is just the end of his old contract. 2007-2009 is the new deal. EDIT NEVERMIND, I just caught the typo. Yes, McCarthy - 1.69 ERA post AS break, Contreras - 2.96.
