Opening Night

Funny stuff from Jayson Stark's blog on ESPN.com...

One thing I'll always try to do in this blog is provide equal time. And Aaron Rowand, the former White Sox World Series hero who is now playing in Philadelphia, petitioned the Federal Stark Blog Monitoring Commission for equal time after reading my account of the White Sox' three-hour rain delay opening night.

Here's the portion of that piece that got Rowand's attention:

Asked how they killed all that time, White Sox catcher/witticist A.J. Pierzynski revealed: "We sat around and watched the World Series DVD for a while there -- and made fun of everyone who showed up on it. But mostly Aaron Rowand."

Rowand, alas, wasn't around to defend himself, since he was traded to the Phillies over the winter. But he still managed to take part in the rain-delay ridicule festivities.

"Yeah, we were texting him back and forth," said his buddy, Pierzynski. "About the best [insult] he came up with was [to Pierzynski]: 'Get a haircut.' But I told him he was just jealous because he doesn't have any hair."

Well, that, Rowand said, wouldn't be an exact or fair representation of his side of the ragging.

"I told him he had a mullet," Rowand reported, "and I told him to break out a curling iron -- so at least the fans could see the name on the back of his jersey. He really didn't say much after that."

Somehow, we both suspect there's a Pierzynski retort coming real soon. And your faithful blog correspondent will be sure to pass it along immediately. Out of respect for the equal-time provisions of the Federal Stark Blog Monitoring Commission Act of 2006, of course.
