Let Briggs Walk

Recommended Posts

He is not very athletic despite what people think. He is not very quick and his top end speed is slow. I have seen him get burned around the corner many times. He makes good reads which makes up for his pedestrian speed but alot of his "talent" comes from everyone thinking about Urlacher.

I can tell you one thing NO ONE game plans for Briggs. He isnt really a playmaker. Doesnt cause a lot of sacks.... gets stood up on blitzes....DROPS MANY INTERCEPTIONS... I think he has the worst hands I have ever seen

There are so many better athletes at LB in this draft

Remeber Briggs is only a 4.8 40 and his cone and side to side motion was lacking. I will give him he has great size but is kinda stiff with that big frame.

There is many decent sized LB's comign out this year with great quickness and 4.5-4.6 times

So so long Briggs.... Warrick Holdman will tell you how good it gets

I think you could put any linebacker at WOLB next to URlacher and make plays because everything comes easy when the defense is tyring to pick off Urlacher anyway they can.

I've been having trouble of late in breaking down anything that has to do with the NFL I think it's because my mind has now completely shifted to baseball. So for this I'll only contest one thing simply because I'm not sure I can put together a coherent thought involving football strategy at the moment.

I do believe that Briggs is a great athlete, though he may have underperformed during his workouts for the '03 Draft. You could let Briggs walk if you think he's not a great athlete and then use a draft pick on a linebacker that is a freak athlete through and through but in doing that you'll be letting a player walk who has been with the the team and has performed unbelievably and replacing him with someone who you believe to be a great athlete but has yet to prove that he can perform in the pros at the level that Briggs has. Just remember a guy like Terrell Suggs had a subpar 40 during his draft workouts and ended up being passed up by the Bears for it, or maybe you think he's the product of the system now to, I don't know. Just because someone is a great athlete does not mean that athleticism will translate to success at the next level.

Briggs has performed at an All-Pro level for the time he has been with the Bears and I believe this to be becaus he is just that damn good, if he walks at the end of the year it will be regreted.

EDIT: I forgot to add that I believe he will be retained by the Bears at the end of the season.

He is not better than Urlacher, not yet, but Urlacher is very overrated and I'm a serious bears fan. It's funny cause other teams players (CAR, GB, SEA, etc.) say that Briggs is a great linebacker who is going to be better (even better than Brian.) Coaches have praised Briggs as well. Urlacher is a GREAT player, but Briggs has the potential to be even better. He really is a beast.

Rosenhaus is such a slimball more money than Urlacher after 1 Pro Bowl go after 2006 see ya.

Yeah I posted that about 2 months ago, that Mr "Next Question" was indeed after that for his client.

What's the deal with his contract currently? Does he have 1 more year left on his deal? Looking at the money Peterson got, and Arrington's probably gonna get, you can see why he wants so much I guess.

Rosenhaus and Angelo have had a pretty good working relationship. I am optimistic that something will get done before the draft.

I think that briggs is a RFA after this season, so the bears want to work out an extension before they have to start matching offer sheets.

At least if he's a RFA, they can place a 1st round tender for him, and get that in compensation if he leaves right?

But I can see why they want to get him locked up, especially when you guys still have cap room.

Well considering he's easily better than Brian "white hope" Urlacher, I'd say letting him walk isn't a good idea.

You could make some statistical arguements that Briggs was better then Urlacher but none would uphold an "easily better than" assessment. Inside and outside linebackers can not be compared fairly as the roles and responsibilities are vastly different. Both players are at the top of their respective positions in the league, regardless of being white or black. dry.gif

You all have to remember the market has changed since urlacher signed his deal. If they were both FA's today Briggs would not get as much money as Urlacher, however, a contract similar to Urlachers is about going price for a guy of Briggs caliber.

Let him walk. Maybe we should try to move up and get A.J. Hawk. We're so close, we should go for the jugular. Get Hawk, get a TE, let Briggs walk, add some depth on the lines and in the secondary, stay healthy and we should win the Super Bowl

I dont think there is anyway the Bears can get high enough to get Hawk. I would love to see him as a Bear though....that would be awesome.

I hope the Packers don't get him. I would have to hate his guts after liking him at Ohio State

I wouldnt hate him. He has no control over where he goes. I definitely would not root for the Pack but I would hope and wish the best for him each game, (except when the play the Bears).

I didnt mean to really bad mouth Lance. Hes a good guy but he is nto a great athlete.

I think one reason people think he might be better than Urlacher is because Urlacher is always smoothered by a guard, FB, chipped by TE.

We are not in the ted Washington fall on blockers era anymore. Our DE/DT must get upfield and stay in their lanes... which they do not yet...too young agressive... so Urlacher is mostly bundled up letting Lance in for easy "tackles"

But besides that what else does he do in a position in which he needs to have better numbers.

In lovie's system he is supposed to the "THE" playmaker because he is the most free to the ball. But he always is held up on blitzes, and takes poor angles to the ball.

Plus in coverage he is a liability. A chad Greenway, Chris Carpenter is a much better athlete to play that spot.

Maybe Im through with Briggs because he wants better than Urlacher money... which I dont agree with.
