White Sox claim pitcher Eduardo Sierra off waivers and option right-hander to Class AA Birmingham

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have claimed pitcher Eduardo Sierra off waivers from the Colorado Rockies and have optioned the right-hander to Class AA Birmingham.

Sierra, 24, was 0-0 with a 5.14 ERA (4 ER/7.0 IP) in six games (all in relief) at Class AAA Colorado Springs this season.

A 6-foot-3 native of the Dominican Republic, Sierra has gone 12-16 with 48 saves and a 3.82 ERA (125 ER/294.1 IP) in 175 games while in the minor-league systems of the Athletics, the Yankees and the Rockies. With 272 strikeouts in 294.1 IP, Sierra has averaged 8.3 strikeouts per 9.0 IP during his career.

Sierra, who led the Florida State League in saves (28) and was third in games finished (35) in 2004, went 3-4 with a 4.71 ERA (38 ER/72.2 IP) in 46 games at Class AA in 2005.

With the addition of Sierra, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 35.

Anybody know anything about this guy?  Is he one of those head cases or guys with great stuff and no control that we took a flyer on and will try to rehab?

We had 6 open spots on the 40-man roster. Frankly, I'm surprised we haven't seen more of this vulturing of other franchises.

Sierra, 23, came to the Yankees from the Athletics in a December 2003 deal for Chris Hammond. Sierra throws hard, reaching the mid-90s with ease and topping out at 98 mph with his fastball. He also has an 81-86 mph slider and an 87-91 mph splitter, but he lacks consistency with those pitches as well as with his control. Projected as a setup man, he has gone 3-1, 3.28 with two saves in 33 games at Double-A Trenton. He has a 50-38 K-BB ratio in 58 innings, and opponents had batted just .187 with four homers against him.

KW is loading up on power arms for the pen now and in the future. Another power guy who has control problems. If AA can fix him and get him throwing strikes, then maybe coop can make somethings happen next year. Low Risk, high reward pickup.

Isn't much of Colorado's farm teams stadiums -- or, at least their AAA/AA teams -- in poor pitching conditions? Let's see what he can do in a real nice pitchers park at Birmingham...

On another note, I'm sort of pissed (but not surprised) that Zach Day didn't make it to the Sox in waivers. He would've been worth a spot on the 40-man -- another nice reclamation project for Cooper. His 2002-2004 numbers were pretty good.

Sox Claim Eduardo Sierra

By Jason Gage

FutureSox.com

The Chicago White Sox claimed RHP Eduardo Sierra off waivers from the Colorado Rockies. Sierra pitched in 6 games for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (AAA) going 0-0 with a 5.14 ERA in 6 games. In 7 innings of work, he gave up 7 hits and 6 walks, while striking out 7. Sierra was sent to Birmingham (AA) and was added to the Sox 40 man roster, which now stands at 35.

Sierra was initially signed by the Oakland Athletics in 1999 as an un-drafted free agent. After spending 6 years in the A’s organization, he moved on to the Yankee’s where he spent the entire 2004 season as the closer for the Yanks High A affiliate (Tampa).

Sierra remained in the Yanks organization until the middle of 2005, when he was traded to the Colorado Rockies as part of the Shawn Chacon deal. At the time of the trade, Sierra had made a lot of progress and had developed into one of the Yanks better relief prospects (3-1, 3.28 ERA in 33 games for AA Trenton). Sierra’s fastball was rated among the best in the Yanks farm system and the Rockies recent strategy had been to target fastball pitchers due to the altitude hurting breaking ball pitchers.

Sierra’s right arm attracted the Sox as well. The 24 year old righty has averaged 8.06 strikeouts per game during his 6 year minor league career. However, Sierra has struggled with his command throughout the minors, averaging almost 5 walks per game (4.92). His walk numbers have actually regressed over the course of his minor league career which is a definite cause of concern and one of the reasons the Sox were able to claim Sierra.

The White Sox staff will now see if they can harness Sierra’s heater, which has been clocked as high as 98 MPH. While Sierra can rare back and reach 98, he consistently throws in the 94-95 MPH range and compliments his fastball with a plus splitter and a solid slider.

FS Take:

Stuff has never been a problem for Sierra and if the organization can improve his control, they may have found a future set up man at the major league level.
