Wanne
Thought this was kind of interesting ESPN going over the 100 worst picks of all time: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story...oenfield/060427 And they had this nugget in there...just thought it was interesting. Same year Joey Cora was drafted by the Padres as well in the first round. Kind of a reaching analogy by them...but I'd never even heard of Kurt Brown. Heads22
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 05:03 PM) If we draft Bonds in 1985, the 2006 roster is COMPLETELY different from what it is now. Its amazing the effect Kurt Brown has had on the organization. Indeed.

Kyyle23
Was this a GM Hawk Harrelson draft? Edited April 27, 2006 by kyyle23
aboz56
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 06:22 PM) Was this a GM Hawk Harrelson draft? When thinking of possibly drafting Bonds, he said... WHERE WOULD HE PLAY? In all honesty, I don't know if Hawk was GM at the time or not.
dmbjeff
i brought this post up last yr.....no it wasnt hawk who made this move, he was GM for one year after i believe...roland hemond made that pick i think
Kyyle23
Hawk was hired after Roland Hemond was fired on Harrelson 10/2/85 http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/execd...am.php?team=CHW I guess the question now is when was this draft? aboz56
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 06:32 PM) Hawk was hired after Roland Hemond was fired on Harrelson 10/2/85 http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/execd...am.php?team=CHW I guess the question now is when was this draft? I'd think it would be around the same time period as the draft currently is. Most likely that it was a Hemond pick. If you look at his track record, he did a whole lot of nothing as a GM. Dick Allen
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 05:22 PM) Was this a GM Hawk Harrelson draft? No, it was Roland Hemond's last as GM. Hawk selected the great Grady Hall his one draft as GM. I have posted this particular draft nugget in the past, and to be fair, it really isn't the GM who is truly making this pick. He's at the mercy of his scouts.

rventura23
not to say that this wasnt one of the stupidst draft picks ever (because it was) but just because we draft bonds doesnt mean in 2001 hes going to still be white sox (he left the pirates in 92) there are way to many factors for me to ever make the statement drafting bonds would have made us win in 2001 (or any year) although drafting him would have made us better. The Critic
Speculation, while fun, is a pretty futile thing. How would Barry and Frank gotten along? Would Barry have left the Sox like, as mentioned, he left Pittsburgh? I'm glad he was never here, though - I've never liked the guy one bit. AngelasDaddy0427
Funniest part of that list... 92. Cade McNown, Chicago Bears (No. 12, 1999)
GoRowand33
the guy didn't mention that barry has no world series rings anyways, so his affect has never helped any team in the playoffs (although he did come close)
Kalapse
QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 08:46 PM) the guy didn't mention that barry has no world series rings anyways, so his affect has never helped any team in the playoffs (although he did come close) I agree, his 8 HRs in the '02 playoffs had absolutely nothing to do with the Giants making it to the World Series. You have to remember that Baseball is a major team sport and if Dusty Baker wasn't such a s***ty in game manager, Bonds would probably have a ring right now and his 1.994 OPS in the '02 WS would be remembered more than it is. WHarris1
Meh you can't look at it the way they did. Drafting Bonds would have changed the course of the franchise forever.
jackie hayes
I hate these "If you had only..." articles. Forget Bonds, every team in MLB passed on Pujols 12 times. There's 100, your next article of moaning is written for you. Imo, it's fair to talk about guys like Darko, where EVERYONE was telling you to go Melo. But noone knew what Jordan, Bonds, Pujols,... would be. It's inane+ to write an article like this unless you called, loudly, every single one of these. rventura23
Bonds' biggest impact according to the article would have come after 2001 and its hard to forecast a guy is going to take steriods (let alone still be a sox) 46 is funny

Walker2Baines
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 07:49 PM) Who did the teams before us pick? 1 Brewers BJ Surhoff 2 Giants Will Clark 3 Rangers Bobby Witt 4 Reds Larkin 5 Brown Interesting note about Brown. He went to the same HS as Aaron Rowand, Glendora HS. Matter of fact Brown graduated 10 years before Rowand.
