rangercal
INDIANAPOLIS -- Left-hander Heath Phillips tossed eight scoreless innings, while third baseman J.D. Fields and second baseman Pedro Lopez collected two hits apiece as Charlotte rolled to its 14th straight road victory -- a 3-0 decision over Indianapolis -- Tuesday evening at Victory Field. The Knights, who continue to own the best record in all of professional baseball, improve to 30-8 overall and 18-3 on the road. The Indians, who still sit atop the International League's West Division, fall to 21-17 on the season. Phillips (8.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO), a native of Evansville, Ind., faced just five over the minimum in his longest outing of 2006. Knights RHP Jeff Farnsworth (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) sealed the deal in the ninth for his ninth save of the season. Charlotte got the only run it would need in the second when 1B Casey Rogowski singled through the left side, stole second, swiped third and scored on a Tribe miscue. The Knights added insurance tallies in the third and sixth. RF Darren Blakely walked in the third and eventually scored on SS Jorge Velandia's single to right field. Fields singled to left center in the sixth and eventually scored when the Indians ran down DH Ernie Young in a first and third situation. Indianapolis RHP Marty McLeary (4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 0-2. Tribe 3B Yurendell de Caster extended his hitting streak to nine games by going 2-for-4 with a double. DH Raul Gonzalez also went 2-for-4, while C Carlos Maldonado added a 2-for-3 effort. Gonzalez has now reached base safely in 21 of his last 22 affairs. The Indians honored Charlotte Manager Razor Shines in a special pre-game ceremony. Shines led Indianapolis to five American Association regular-season titles during the 1980s ('84, '86, '87, '88 and '89). He spent a total of nine seasons with the Tribe -- 1984-89, 1991-93 -- before joining the coaching ranks. The two clubs return to Victory Field Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., for game two of the four-game series. LHP Sean Burnett is scheduled to get the start for Indianapolis, while LHP Stephen Randolph is expected to get the nod for Charlotte. The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Wednesday's pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.

Chisoxfn
QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 10:58 PM) If Iguchi is not resigned after 2007, would Pedro Lopez be considered a possible replacement at second base? A backup utility guy, Lopez could be. Especially since he plays pretty good defense at both SS and 2B and has shown good range. However, he doesn't have the stick to be an everyday player so unless that changes (and he is actually still pretty young, despite him being in our system for what seems to be a century) we are royally screwed if he replaces Guchi as our everyday 2nd baseman.
