Well this is just great! My wife is a Cub fan and I agree to go to at least 1 or 2 Cub games a year. (This is the least I can do since I drag her to at least 10 Sox games a year) What are the god damn odds that I just happen to be going to the game tomorrow, where I will be surrounded by dips*** Cub fans protesting about their s***ty team! Not exactly what I consider a fun day.

you're going to come back feeling so great that you're a sox fan though.

The protest apperantly didn't work:

well, unfortunately, i feel defeated. only because i didn't get the turnout i was hoping for. maybe 15 people. we were all on the score for 2 weeks, many blogs, but not a big turnout for support. we were interviewed by cbs and fox news so that was cool. the only thing i can hope we accomplished with this, is for it to be noticed by others and maybe start to grow somehow. oh well, i gave it shot. i feel exhausted, but trust me, we were heard! so much so, that the cubs had their merry old band come out near us and play music to try to drown us out. it didn't work though, we had a LOUD megaphone. gotta run, i'm out. thanks for the support. i'll send pics to you guys over at 1060.

I'm not surprised it didn't work. Cub fans don't care about winning. What mattered yesterday was the beer was flowing, the sun was out, and the women were in bikinis. If the Cubs happen to win, so much the better. If not, they're too drunk to care.

Speaking about this, has anyone heard this song? Don't know if it's been posted, but I haven't seen it yet. I apologize if it has.

Sounds like the whole thing just bombed. Even the fans that attended the game weren't very receptive.

This protest more feeble than target

By Mike Imrem

The demonstration was to protests what the Cubs are to baseball — pretty pathetic.

Everything at Wrigley Field is these days. The home team. The protesters. The target audience for both of them.

The dissidents at Clark and Addison consisted of six guys demanding Tribune Company sell the Cubs.

Worthy cause, poor execution, underwhelming impact.

One protester scribbled “Go Cubs!” on a paper bag over his head. Another wore a Bill Buckner Cubs shirt. The rest looked like they stopped on the way to therapy.

“I think we had 10 (earlier),” one of the protesters said of the Saturday morning turnout. “There was supposed to be more. I guess (the others) got cold feet.”

As a security guard observed, shaking his head, “That’s a sad protest.” In other words, if this were a 1970 antiwar demonstration, we’d still be in Vietnam.

Abby Hoffman would have been embarrassed. No arrests were made, no one had to be sprayed with mace, no fights broke out despite a fan in a muscle shirt sizing up a demonstrator.

Come on, fellas, at least burn a Cubs flag, tear up a bleacher ticket or shout “Hell no, we won’t go!”

Seriously, the scene would have been comical if it weren’t so tragic. Scratch that. Indonesia is tragic right now. Iraq is. Enron still is.

The Cubs are only baseball. So yeah, the scene was comical.

Placards amused with messages like, “We want more players, not more seats” and “We had grinders in 1908!”

Chants weren’t bad either: “Trib go away … sell the Cubs!” and “Stop the pain!” Except, a vendor responded to “Sell the Cubs!” with “Buy more programs!” and a fan responded to “Stop the pain!” with “Stop the protest!”

Meanwhile, the band played on.

Gentlemen in Cubs tops tooted horn instruments, accompanied by a banjo, going about the business of entertaining fans arriving prior to the Cubs-Braves game.

Nearby, customers lined up to purchase standing-room tickets. Others accepted bags of peanuts from young women in tight shirts promoting a new bar in the neighborhood. Still others bought those programs and swayed to that music.

So yes, the beat went on outside just as the beatings would inside — another Cubs’ loss, this time 2-1.

Most fans glanced at and quickly away from the protest as if it were a freak show, which it sort of was.

“No,” a woman said simply when asked whether she supports the demonstration. … “We support the Tribune,” a man snickered without much conviction. … “Shut your yap,” another said to a protester screaming for Cubs president Andy MacPhail to come down from his tower.

One guy did flash a feeble thumbs-up at the dissidents. He wore a Cubs’ “Prior 22” jersey. Fittingly, Mark Prior is on the disabled list and contributing about as much as his active teammates are.

As far as I could tell, no fans — not even the young man in the “Hong Kong Phooey” T-shirt — stopped long enough to join the Silly Six.

Attendance for the game was 41,526, the biggest at Wrigley since 1978. No, no no-shows could be seen, so to speak, in the crowd.

“That’s just society today,” one of the protesters said of the tepid response to the protest. “Everybody’s afraid.”

Up above him the marquee read, “Welcome to Wrigley Field … Home of Chicago Cubs … Derrek Lee autographed baseball day.”

Lee, too, is on the disabled list.

And the band played on.

Well done.

The three game series with the Braves, which featured 0 Cubs wins and a comedy of poor play, drew 124,089 and set a franchise record for attendance in a 3-game series.

You douchebags really stuck it to the Tribune company.

Those numbers are why the 2 following are true:

1. The Cubs always have (well almost always) and always will suck. The Tribune has no reason to get rid of this cash cow, and has no reason to try to win with the sheep at the game every day.

2. I always have and always will hate and wish the worst on the Cubs. That whole operation is an embarassment to Chicago, all of them....the fans, owners, front office, ballpark, neighborhood, all of it.

Well said. As long as there's beer and hot chicks, the fans will come. And I f***ing hate their fans as well. I want to knock the s*** out of someone when I see them wearing a Cubs hat and shirt.

Hey Willey Ligue, Jr.,

A.) It is just a game. One you are not even playing in, for crips sake. Take a step back and a deep breath.

B.) There is nothing the Cubs can do outside of 6 games a year that will affect the White Sox. You hate the Cubs more than you love the Sox. You may not have noticed but the Sox play against American league teams. One of them has a better record than we do right now. I will bet you my house the Cubs are not going to catch the Sox for the American League Central this season.

C.) The Cubs/Sox rivalry should always be in good fun and in good taste.

If a baseball game makes you want to get violent, you need to move to Europe and become a soccer fan where that kind of thing is acceptable. You have issues. You give Sox fans a bad name. Please stop it.

Thanks,

Dixie.

An embarassment to Chicago? You really need to stop exaggerating the current status of the Cubs and start paying attention to other things. Last time I checked, the White Sox won the World Series last year and have a good chance of doing it again this year. Yeah, the Cubs are awful, get over it.

And if you honestly think that Wrigleyville is an embarassment to Chicago, you should really go to the lovely parts of the South Side instead. I heart Stateway Gardens and parts of the West Side are absolutely beautiful in the summer. Wrigleyville is a very cool place, it's just inhabited by too many yuppies.

Actually the west and south sides of Chicago are being rehabbed. The Pilsen area used to be absolutely horrible and it has a bunch of new condos and townehomes going up. Near UIC used to be awful as well, but is being nicely rehabbed. I have been to Wrigleyville and I am not a big fan. Then again I am not a teenaged or college aged boy looking to get my drink on and puke all Saturday/Sunday morning either.

The UIC area is awesome now, University Village and Taylor st are really nice areas, they look like early LP in some ways. Few remember that Wrigleyville and LP not too long ago were some of the worst areas in the city. Now they have hit high market prices on property which has cause overdeveloping and overcrowding. I used to live in LP, I never would again. The population of rats and the crime alone will drive some of the developers to try other areas of the city.

Yea, UIC is really nice now. I was going to go there if I didn't get into Minnesota, so I visited it and such, and its really an up and coming area.
