Been to quite a few. They are fun, and I enjoy the crosstown games as much as the next person. I just fail to see how we as Sox fans would put beating the Cubs as such a high priority. Beating them is nice cause I really dont like the Cubs, but I think we have much bigger fish to fry these days.

I understand the cultural thing and all, but with a World Championship in hand and more in our sights, the Sox/Cubs series seems a little melodramatic. Yes, it gets a lot of hype and media attention, probably moreso than the more important series. I'm just saying that our franchise has gotten to the point where this shouldn't mean so much to us Sox fans. Its this constant need to show everybody that we are better than the Cubs that makes us look kinda silly.

But I guess I did miss your point. In regards to media attention, fan interest and hype, yes, it probably beats any other regular season series. My response was more directed to the 1300 or so people (according to the poll) and the seemingly 15% of our fanbase that still dwells on having a superiority over the Cubs above all else.

Oh hell no, above all else? Not me. I'm just saying these are probably the most emotionally charged games of the season year after year. Mathematically they're not important, but perhaps culturally they become larger than life (although once the series is over everybody forgets who won the series, because it's irrelevant).

We don't need to show the Cubs anything; we are World Series champions. And one of the bonuses of last year is that they have nothing to say to that until they are. And that seems like it's going to be a long, long time away.

I-55 series. My bad. I always do that too.

I like a balanced schedule and interleague takes away from that. The Mets know every year they will have a battle with the Yankees, the Cubs know they will face a top team in the Sox. Houston will have an easier time with Kap's backyard team, the Rangers.

I liked the theoretical debates with cluelessCub fans. Actually beating them isn't as much fun.

hassles? distraction? What are you talking about? Are interleague games somehow logistically more difficult? Are the teams in another country or something?

These games are fun. We get to see teams play that wouldn't have before. They are no more/less meaningful than games against AL West or East teams, to me. Plus the rivalry series are fun for the fans. Given that interleague play is, what, 20 games a year per team? I really only see upside to it.

Well, I agree with you to a point from a general geographic standpoint, but there are definitely hassles and distractions involved. There is the loss of a balanced schedule as mentioned by TexSox. There is also the problem of no DH in NL parks. Depending on your draw for the year, that could impact you in the year end standings. You are also dealing with ballparks unfamiliar to a lot of the players on your team. This goes even further with different travel arrangements and unfamiliar city surroundings. Finally, the intercity series are way overhyped for ratings and definitely make 6 regular season games way too important. The pressure of the playoff atmosphere can be a good thing, but I think the energy spent trying to win these games to keep the fan base happy has taken its toll on some of these teams in the past. I remember a couple of times where the Sox were all hyped up against the Cubs and then had a week or so letdown after the fact. Hopefully that will not be the case this weekend.

And over time, the dominant teams change. In case everyone forgot, the Yankees went through quite a bit of suckdom in the 80's. And the Royals were a contender during that same time. The "balanced schedule" thing evens out over time.

Shrink "rivalry" series down to three games.

No. The only series that should have 6 games; Cubs-Sox, Dodgers-Angels, A's-Giants, Yankees-Mets.

3 Game with alternating cities each season; Marlins-D'Rays, Reds-Indians, Twins-Brewers, Cards-Royals, O's-Nats, Astros-Rangers

Don't forget to mention how long of a season baseball is. Playing a team in April will not be the same as playing a team in July or September. If we're going to play even schedules, we mine as well have one division.
