Cubs take another whipping

The press has really got it's teeth sunk into the Cubs this morning and their not looking to let go. Mariotti sums up his column with "Bleep the Cubs" and it's an accurate reflection of the content. They are getting reemed from all directions. I almost feel for the players. This isn't their fault. It's strictly management, or more accurately, the lack thereof.

It isn't the players fault? Come on now. Maybe management didn't put them in the best position, but ultimately it is the players fault. Their players aren't hitting, they can't run the bases, their pitchers aren't throwing strikes, and they don't play good defense. The Cubs are very bad, and the players are to blame.

 

If the Sox were playing the same way as the Cubs are right now, we would be all over them. Some of us would even be calling for certain players to lose their starting jobs. That's just the way things go. If a team isn't performing, the fans, the paying customers, have a right to display their unhappiness. If the Cubs don't like that, they are in the wrong business. Baseball is a public display of your skills, and if you don't have the skills or you aren't using your skills, people aren't going to be happy watching you.

Yesterday on the way to the game, I was listening to some show on the score and cubs fans were just calling in and absolutely ripping their team and organization.

 

It is really a mess over there, not just on the field either. Maybe if they'd stop selling out every game, some sort of message would be brought across.

I listened for a good part of the day yesterday, and some Sox "fan" calling himself Sox fan Maury emailed Murphy predicting a sweep of the Sox because of the matchups. Personally, I think Sox fan Maury is code for Score host Murphy, and he had to slip something like that in to make it seem like there was someone out there who believed the Cubs would win.

Steve Stone is just brutal when he talks about the Cubs now. I love it, you can tell he is saying whats on his mind instead of being Mr Nice Guy.

I say it isn't the players fault because management did not gather enough players with skills. Most of the players on the Cubs are just happy to have a job in MLB. I mean really, I'm 48 years old with a piece s*** arm but if I could make the ML minimum for playing s***ty baseball at Wrigley, I'd do it.

Yeah, I do agree that management didn't put together a very talented team, but players like Aramis Ramirez, Michael Barrett, Jaque Jones, Juan Pierre, Todd Walker, Greg Maddux, Carlos Zambrano, Kerry Wood, and Ryan Dempster are better than just being happy being in the league.

 

By no means are they the most talented team in MLB, but they have to play better than what they have been. If I were a Cubs fan, I wouldn't be happy either, but thankfully I'm a Sox fan so I can just give a little smile with the Cubs struggling. But Aramis Ramirez and Juan Pierre especially are performing WAY below expectations.

"As long as 3.2 million fans come in the turnstyles and they keep listening on WGN radio and watching on WGN television - of course there is pressure to win, but it's not as much as you would think. Because if it was, if there was indeed a "winning at all cost" attitude, if there was a sense of urgency, then how in the world could you possibly explain spending less money than the Chicago White Sox despite the fact that you have out drawn them by 750 thousand people every year. I would've liked to seen an investment in the baseball team. it's one thing if you don't want to pay luxury tax - that's at at about 117 milion, but it's another thing to be about 20 million short of that and to see that you need another starting pitcher and to see that you need another banger, and when your big first baseman goes out, you can fill in with Todd Walker who never played first in his life and maybe occasionally Jon Mabry. I mean it's okay, it's not good enough. And to go through that stretch of of 13 of 15 games where you're not scoring any runs, your staff is getting hammered, you can't execute defensively or offensively. They're in a situation now where they're really behind the 8 ball. literally. They're 8 games in the loss column back of St. Louis. last year they were 21 games worse than St. Louis. Looking at the baseball team this year, did you think they added 21 games to their roster? I didn't. So the thing you had to hope for was St. louis to come back to the pack. Not as long as Walt Jockety, Tony Larussa and Dave Duncan are there."
