No Surprises

posted by Sheps on May 22nd, 2006

How shocked was I when Michael Barrett cold-cocked White Sox catcher AJ Pierzynski in the face on Saturday afternoon? About as shocked as I was to see Pierzynski’s name on a list of the most hated athletes in a resent article in GQ magazine. (Next to Stuff and Maxim, GQ really is the authority on professional sports.) Pierzynski came in 9th, Bonds was number 2 and the much maligned T.O. finished 1st, just to put things in perspective.

You know what’s different about AJ and the other egos on this list? You guessed it, most sports fans don’t even know who the heck AJ Pierzynski is. That says a lot to me. Pierzynski’s not that good or that well known, he wasn’t arrested in Eagle Colorado and he didn’t lie to congress about juicing. Pierzynski isn’t Barry Bonds or Ty Cobb or Pete Rose, at least not in ability or fame. No, Pierzynski is quite simply just a Grade-A &%*#$%@ who’s been deserving of a shot to the face for a very long time.

Now I’m not exactly defending Barrett’s decision to punch Pierzynski. And you can debate all day if Pierzynski initiated contact with Barrett after slapping home plate or not. Barrett will be suspended and that stinks, we’ll no-doubt miss his bat and The Blanko’s sub-.100 average only compounds the nightmare with Lee still on the DL. But, I’m not surprised Barrett delivered that punch to Pierzynski’s obnoxious face, and you shouldn’t be either. That’s all I’m saying.

In an interview after the game when asked if he was ok, Pierzynski admitted he had been punched many times before. No kidding. Really, the only surprise here is that his White Sox teammates came to his defense at all. Just wait Southside fans, that type of support for this piece of garbage won’t last much longer. Just ask folks from Minnesota and San Francisco, you’ll be one of them before long.

So Michael, I wish you hadn’t done it, but I do definitely get it. Next time, I just hope Ozzie Guillen can be the one to push your buttons.

On their MLB board, alot of them side with AJP. I mean, Barrett's actions were so retarded even he admitted that he was wrong.

AJP might be a 'prick' as they put it...but he's a prick with a World Series Championship ring. He is a gamer, and Barrett...well, 'chump' sounds about right.

People get pissed at AJ for s*** like this based on reputation. Deep down they know he did nothing wrong this weekend, but his reputation will not let them admit it.

It's a bulls*** view, but it's true.

Sorry, nothing to post here. It is just that I would like to read what Rock wrote but can't seem to avert my eyes from his avatar.

The fact that any Cub fan or player (Rich Hill, cough, cough) would call out AJ is a perfect statement of what is wrong with the Cubs. If the Cubs had more players that played the game the way AJ does, maybe they wouldn't be in the situation they are in now. Anyone that thinks AJ was out of line has been lulled to sleep by watching poorly-played, lackluster, lackadaisical baseball for a while. Welcome to the big leagues.

this is what kind of pisses me off. There are plenty of twins fans around here and not one of them had any problems with aj when he played for the twins. not until san fransisco did they care. i still don't know why they boo him at the dome. they ripped off the giants and opened up a spot for mauer when they traded him. ignorant fans like that really upset me.

They few cub fans I have talked to since then seem to think that plowing over the catcher is a somewhat new occurence. These are people that I thought actualy understood the game.

conversation with my friend:

Buddy: michael barrett is my hero

me: Barrett is a b****.

Buddy: aj needs to realize as a fellow catcher, that its just not cool to throw your forearm into another catchers throat, then proceed to slap the plate...after he was safe.

me: Whatever *click*

The only reason I wasn't shocked by this play is because it was Torii Hunter all over again, except this time it was us on the delivery side, which is a good sign.

I'm surprised there's so much controversy. You block the plate, this is what you can expect. We know it, and we knew it from Torii. Why don't the Cubs?

Can somebody remind me exactly what AJP did to deserve this "reputation" he has of being an asshole. All I can remember is that people complained that he was a "clubhouse cancer" or some other nonsense. I don't see it, because from what I can see, he gets along great with everyone on the team. Maybe he was just frustrated playing for s***ty teams, or playing with other assholes. I think we've got some of the classiest guys in the league on our team, and I don't think KW would've brought AJP in if he thought AJ was some asshole.
