CWS: Playoffs will be starting soon

Let's not leave out Evansville, winner of the Missouri Valley for the first time. Evansville won the Valley regular season title by a half game over Missouri State. They proceeded to lose their first round game in the tournament to Bradley and then promptly run-ruled SIU and Wichita State and then beat Missouri St. twice to take the tournament title.

This is, I believe Evansville's 3rd ever trip to the tourney. We went to Arizona State my sophomore year and beat the host Sun Devils before falling to UNLV (Donovan Osborne) and Central Michigan. A few years ago they went to Florida State and lost their first two, I believe.

They win the Valley and draw South Carolina playing at Virginia this weekend. South Carolina is a good team, but anything can happen. One thing I do know is that USC will have about 50x more fans there than Evansville will.

That was 1998. We beat Arizona State 1-0 in front of a packed house at Sun Devil stadium. He was clocked at 98mph in the 9th inning of that game, which took him from a sure first rounder to the #1 overall pick. ASU averaged 13 runs a game that year and came all the way back to make it deep into the CWS after we beat them. Shutting them out was a huge deal. I still remember the headline in the Phoenix newspaper "Ace Trumps Devils" with a huge photo of Benes on the front of the sports page. Enough reminiscing.........

1988 right? My HS trainer worked a lot with Benes back in the day at Evansville after he had surgery... Heck you might even know him.

Yep, '88. What trainer are you talking about?

GO GO JAYHAWKS. College baseball's best name, Kodiak Quick comes thru.

Now beat the beavers and lets take on the longhorns.

It's double elimination. Kansas needs to win more than 1 more game to win the regional.

I'll take this ending!!!

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Evansville Purple Aces remained alive in the Charlottesville Regional with a 10-6 come-from-behind victory over Lehigh in an elimination game Saturday at Davenport Field. Evansville scored seven runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a three-run deficit, capped by Robbie Minor’s walk-off grand slam.

Evansville taking a similar path to the one they took last week to win the Missouri Valley Tournament. They lost their opening round game and then won their way through the loser's bracket, beating up on good teams along the way, including run-ruling Wichita State and Southern Illinois.

After beating Lehigh last night in a come-from-behind win, the Aces are currently beating top-seeded and host Virginia 11-1 in the 5th inning. Still a long way to go to finish off this game and facing the task of beating South Carolina twice. Stay tuned ;-)

In other news, Smoke Laval (sp?) has resigned as LSU's Head Coach. LSU missed the NCAA tourney this year for the first time since 1988.

Defending champ Texas is out after a 6-3 loss to NC State. The Longhorns only make it to the final 48 this year.

Meanwhile Mizzou beat UCLA 2-1 to move on to the round of the 32 for the first time in a while. They face Pepperdine at 5.

Evansville finishes off Virginia 15-4. Onto South Carolina later today...

MVC...represent!

WCWS now is Northwestern and UCLA going to extras tied at 1. NW was up 1-0 in the 7th and UCLA tied it with two outs.

NW with back to back jimmy jacks and lead 3-1 in the 8th.

It will be interesting to see Mizzou win tonight, because they will probably throw Schezerer tomorrow.

Mizzou follows through with that. 2 complete games on the day by freshman pitchers. 4-1 is the final. Scherzer will probably start, but only go maybe 4 innings. He'll be going on 2 days rest...
