LOL. Who was the last "person of higher character" who made it onto a Presidential Election ballot for the two major parties? Maybe Bob Dole? Michael Dukakis? Jimmy Carter?

I was thinking all levels, but you ask a good question.

We would have to endure years of gridlock. Having a third party would increase the number of political deal making to get anything though Congress.

i totally disagree

the know-nothing party might do suprisingly well in the upcoming presidential election.

Yeah, What we need in American politics is the overtly racist anti-immigrant political party Hell, America could have its own chapter of France's Front National party [led by Jean Marie Le Pen] where he's advocated putting Muslims in giant cages and stating that "100 Immigrants = 100 Unemployed".

Given the current split of the GOP, and the messy Dems, I think you'd see any third party that was remotely successful be centered somewhere near where the non-religious fanatic GOPers stand. Small government types, not idealogues. mildy right of center on a net basis.

But no matter what that party is or becomes, it would require something that you see very, very few of in modern politics - charismatic leadership. It would need a great leader or two to spearhead it. So, who might that be?

For the record, I think any third or fourth party getting more involved in the process is fantastic for this country. But I think its a longshot to happen.

Sure it's a longshot. After Perot got their attention, the two parties 'were able to put aside their differences' enough to change the rules of the presidential debates to make it damn near impossible for a third party candidate to qualify for participation.
