SnB
I always watch it, thought I gotta admit, I kinda feel bad for some of these kids. They're so nervous
greasywheels121
I remember in elementary school, I'd intentionally spell a word wrong just so I could sit down. I hated those things.
Soxy
Heck no. There's 2 hours of the Office on NBC! Plus I'm still bitter about losing the 3rd grade spelling bee. Although I always will remember how to spell ache.
SnB
QUOTE(Soxy @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 12:05 PM) Heck no. There's 2 hours of the Office on NBC! pffft, that's meaningless when you have all the episodes on your computer.
Milkman delivers
I feel these kids' parents are the kind that push them to be perfect to the point that the kids can't even enjoy themselves. On another note, I lost one spelling bee in my entire time in grade school. I never studied, but the words always stuck in my head after seeing them once or twice. Jake
I really hate spelling bees, even though I've been somewhat successful. Too boring, too many people staring at you and what not. I retired from spelling bees this year after winning our county bee.
SleepyWhiteSox
I kinda feel dumb for not knowing most of those words... But yeah, there's a little bit of satisfaction knowing I could beat those kids up at that age. Edited June 1, 2006 by SleepyWhiteSox
WilliamTell
I'm mean, I watch it just to see them spell a word wrong and then laugh.
Texsox
I guess if all that was on was spelling bees or NASCAR, I'd maybe watch it . . . I kid because, I care
DonkeyKongerko
'wehrmacht' in the 8th f***ing round? This s*** is so rigged. How long have they allowed parents on stage with the kids? Also, why are they using the Windows ding.wav as their warning sound? They really need to make another Cheap Seats about all this.
SoxFan1
I won the Spelling Bee 3 times in elementary school and was runner up once. I usually watch it for the same reasons as WilliamTell but this year, I did not. Edited June 2, 2006 by SoxFan1

Soxy
QUOTE(shoota @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 11:51 PM) social retards Yep, we're the ones that sound socially inept in this thread. . .
shoota
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 03:04 PM) I feel these kids' parents are the kind that push them to be perfect to the point that the kids can't even enjoy themselves. That's a great point. We always hear about the pushy Little League Dad living his life through his son, but the parents of spelling bee nerds are much more damaging to their kids' lives than the former. Milkman delivers
I wouldn't use the term "social retards," but a lot of these kids will clearly be f***ed in the long run and not have any friends. You just can't do that to a kid.
RibbieRubarb
QUOTE(shoota @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 10:55 PM) That's a great point. We always hear about the pushy Little League Dad living his life through his son, but the parents of spelling bee nerds are much more damaging to their kids' lives than the former. I think the extreme nature of both sides is equal. The agressive side of the "exteme sports parent" will focus on personal failure, failure towards your parents and extreme disrespect towards others. It often stems from the parent's own failure as an athletic youth. It's a bullying attitude. I don't see the "Bee" parents yelling at their children or other children in public, throwing items on stage, or getting into fights with pother parents. But the extreme "Bee" parents, who have a reckless drive to succeed, do have a negative emotional impact on their children.

Texsox
Gee, can kids be successful without pushy parents and becomming social nerds? Believe it or not but some kids enjoy intellectual challenges.

Milkman delivers
QUOTE(Texsox @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 07:42 AM) Gee, can kids be successful without pushy parents and becomming social nerds? Believe it or not but some kids enjoy intellectual challenges. Of course they can. Hell, I used to watch Jeopardy! all the time from grade school through high school, and I was damn good at it. But, I bet there is a pretty significant percentage of these spelling bee families that fall into the category of being the obsessive, pushy perfectionists.
