witesoxfan
I was thinking about this topic the other day and was wondering who some of the best players to change position from college to the pros were in history. The two names that come to mind immediately for we young-ins are Hines Ward, Antwaan Randle-El, and Matt Jones, but there are more than that. So just for debate during s***ty times for the Sox, and for football gurus, who were some of the best of the past, and for the matter, even now? And while we're at the best, maybe we can even name some of the worst too.

Palehosefan
Ronald Curry was becoming a very good WR for the Raiders before blowing out his second achiles last year, thankfully he's progressing very well. He was quite possibly the best high school player in history and overshadowed Mike Vick who was in the same state and played the same position, and Curry played QB his entire college career at UNC. Joey Porter and Clark Haggans were bookends at Colorado State, before developing into LB's for the Steelers. Otherwise I can't think of too many other guys outside of the ones you mentioned as well. knightni
Urlacher was a safety at New Mexico. Antonio Gates was a power forward at Kent St. Edited June 6, 2006 by knightni

WilliamTell
I think Tennessee Titans WR Drew Bennett was a quarterback in college.
SoxFan1
Do LB/DE transitions count? Because Derrick Thomas and Terrell Suggs would be high on that list. As would Willie McGinest.
kapkomet
Antonio Gates is an amazing story.
Palehosefan
Quite a few guys trying to follow in Gates footsteps this year. Jai Lucas of George Mason, and Ed Nelson of UConn just to name a few his year. Edited June 6, 2006 by Palehosefan
witesoxfan
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 03:38 PM) Do LB/DE transitions count? Because Derrick Thomas and Terrell Suggs would be high on that list. As would Willie McGinest. Of course, anyone in general. The ones that are publicized most are generally QB to WR, but I'm just wondering about all players that made position changes. And for that matter, DE's can move to DT even once in the NFL. I know for a fact Kevin Williams has played some DE for Minnesota, and he's a DT by nature...or maybe it's the other way around. I know he plays, or has played, both in the past. Phuck the Cubs
How about Jerry Azumah?? He was a RB who converted to a DB

SoxFanForever
Adam Archuleta was a LB in College and a pretty good safety in the Pro's.
