8th round pick: Kent Gerst.

One of the fastest players at the Area Code Games last summer, outfielder Kent Gerst could be the first high school player drafted out of Missouri. A Missouri State recruit, he's considered signable in the first 10 rounds, and the White Sox have shown as much interest as any club. Gerst has 65-70 speed on the 20-80 scouting scale, and he's a legitimate center fielder and leadoff man. He makes contact but there are some concerns about his size (5-foot-10, 175 pounds).

Now this is what I was expecting from the sox. Drafting speed. Low Risk, high reward.

Love this Chris Duffy pick, if we can sign him. Has a strong arm at 3B, and a smooth lefty stroke, somewhat reminds me of David Ortiz's swing.

Watching the MLB.com video, yeah I would say a young Ortiz is a good comparison. I have no insight into his plate approach, but he appeared patient, waiting to hit his pitch as hard as possible. He smashed one foul in the video that made me say WOah!

A butcher in the field...but the kid can RAKE.

FS Stuff on last two picks:

• Christopher Duffy, 3B - Duffy is the first "tough sign" the Sox have went with. A very talented prep hitter out of Florida, Duffy saw his stock slip due to questions about his defense as well as high bonus demands. Duffy is very strong for his age and projects to hit for a lot of power. He has a short, quick swing and is the type of high schooler that could have immediate success at the minor league level.

• Kent Gerst, CF - Gerst is an "Ozzie" pick. One of the fastest players in the draft, the 8th round pick out of a Missouri High School is considered a solid commit to Southwest Missouri State. BA reported that the Sox had shown heavy interest in Gerst and it is assumed the Sox will be able to come to terms. Gerst is a good contact hitter with plus speed who has the potential to develop into an above average center fielder. He has little pop and could be Ozzie's leadoff man in 3-4 years.

Lee Cruz...OF...Univ of Tampa Bay

• LEE Cruz, LF - Cruz finishes up a season in which he was a part of the Division II World Series National Champion and now will join the defending World Series Champion White Sox. A 10th round pick out of the University of Tampa Bay, Cruz batted .441 with 26 HR and 97 RBI. A senior with Tampa Bay, Cruz should be a relatively easy sign who knows how to handle the bat. However, he was playing against lesser competition in an offensive league so his stats are partially skewed.

Jason, you sure it was an offensive league? Tampa's pitchers have alot of low era's. I didn't check other teams stats though.

IIRC DII was pretty offensive, althoug he plays in the top DII league as well (Sunshine league or something like that).

Andrew Urena in RD 11 (RHP out of Mercer).

I am heading off, so I'll update a lot of stuff later on tonight/early tomorrow AM prior to the draft.

Alex and Dan will probably be updating stuff on FS as well.

In the 15th round the Sox took Yasser Clor.

Few other high school pitchers in the state were moving up draft boards. One who was, righthander Yasser Clor, could go in the first five to seven rounds because of his strong body and good present stuff. He battled ankle injuries as a junior and recovered to show well at showcases, throwing 89-92 mph and maintaining his velocity. His curveball, inconsistent in his prep career, has shown potential to be a solid-average pitch, if not a tick above. Clor's signability may have gone up last month when he tried to back out of his commitment to Nevada-Las Vegas (he decided he wanted to stay closer to home after a friend's death). The school would not let him out of his national letter of intent, so while he can attend college elsewhere in 2007, he can not play college baseball

The Red Sox just drafted Laporta. Is there a reason he fell this far?

High K rate. Needs to improve strike zone control. Decreased power because of injury. Scott Boras. He's only a junior, so once he slipped past the first couple rounds, he'll go back to school. Considering he was considered one of the top college position players entering the year, he needs to go back to school unless the redsox throw a ton of money at him, which isn't out of the question.

Gotcha. Thanks.

With Sox having SP locked up thru 2007 and some good minor league SP, Sox reallly had a chance to think outside the box and draft a good position player early and to draft 3 pitchers first 3 rounds is major over kill to me, time will tell.

Well first you can never have enough pitching as everyone knows, next, pitching is always going to be valued the most and with the way Kenny uses our minor leaguers, it makes perfect sense.

Well, I just got back from my high school graduation. You might ask what relevance that has to the draft, and I'll tell you :P

Right before we were going to walk in, someone in my class, Ryan Kalish, was drafted by the Red Sox with the 283rd pick (9th round) in the draft. I guess he had been told before that they were going to pick him, and naturally pulled a Red Sox hat out of his pocket. All of the seniors went crazy of course, and lets just say this graduation was rather memorable :P

lol Heads, I hope you weren't referring to me when you said Tampa not Tampa Bay. I was speaking of the University of Tampa's pitchers having low era's.

Gage's write up on Lee Cruz:
