Chisoxfn
Random Notes From Day One FutureSox.com With the draft moving into the 3rd round, FutureSox.com will continue its coverage with bullet updates of the prospects the Sox take throughout day one. We will do our best to update this as quick as the picks come in, so make sure to check this story often. • Tyler Reves, C - Reves was taken by the Sox in the 4th round of Texas Tech. Considered a reach, Reves hit .300 with 13 HR's, 51 RBI, 21 BB, and 39 K's in his first season with the Red Raiders (Junior). Prior to playing with Texas Tech, Reves was one of the top hitters at Wharton Community College and won the rawlings big stick award in 05. A relatively good athlete, the Sox drafted Edwards for his bat and arm with the hope that he can make enough progress behind the plate to be an everyday catcher in time. Reves joins Donny Lucy and Francisco Hernandez as the Sox top catching prospects and already has the best throwing arm in the system (threw out 65% of would be base-stealers). • Justin Edwards, LHP - A 3rd round pick and one of the top prep pitchers in Florida, Edwards is a soft throwing lefty who has committed to the University of Georgia. Despite a lack of velocity (FB in the mid 80's and has topped out at 90), Edwards is considered a good prospect (ranked 108 by BA) and should gain a little velocity as his body fills (to move him into the upper 80's). Edwards wasn't drafted for his velocity, rather his command of his FB, a big overhand curve, and a good changeup.
