greg775
on, word to the wise....Shut the f*** up and pitch....you want to silence the media, do it with your arm. Prove that we should not have a thing to b**** about.... I loved Garland's comments and Ozzie's too. They both spoke their mind. At least Garland is treading water and doing OK. He's not a Chen or some of the stiffs out there. Some people are never going to like Garland becauase he's a pretty boy from California and not intense. Let Jon earn his millions and laugh at his critics as he winds up with the Pam Anderson's of the world on his arm. Garland is not a stiff. He's a good No. 4 or 5 pitcher. Greg The Bull Luzinski
At least Jon Garland will make a great 5th starter in the playoffs when he is out in the bullpen sitting furthest away from the phone. Next year, it will be a lot harder to hear his b****ing when the no trade clause expires and he is pitching elsewhere.
The Beast
QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 10:36 AM) Quotes from Whitesox.com Personally I think he should shut his mouth and throw the ball better. You aren't throwing the ball well, so man up and do better. Quit being a crybaby. All I'd say to Garland is "f*** you, and throw the goddamn ball better because right now you suck ass! Your lucky we gave you money to stick around here..." (AND A NO TRADE CLAUSE!) Sorry, I'm very frustrated with how Garland is pitching. Kalapse
How exactly is a 6.19 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and .310 BAA treading water? Seems to me he's drowning. I think some people might just be as delusional as Garland.
SleepyWhiteSox
What a f***in' pussy for making those comments...all he had to do was continue to try to work things out and keep quiet to keep my support and the support of many other fans, I'm sure, but instead he comes up with these prima donna rich athlete comments...I HATE that type of attitude... Unless he's gonna return his paychecks, I have absolutely NO sympathy.
greg775
I can't remember a more hated White Sox player except maybe Royce Clayton. The guy is a decent No. 4, 5 pitcher. Why do people hate him so? There's more support for Anderson than Garland. That amazes me.

Pre 2005, we were all getting increasingly frustrated as jon never seemed to live up to his potential. Last year he came out of nowhere and dominated. Now it seems like we're right back where we started from 2 years ago.

Jon has been horrible this year and I think it's comments like that, that make people dislike him even more, it's kind of like when a few years ago where he said something along the lines of "I don't come to your job and boo you." You add in the nice contract he got this past offseason and he's not going to be very well liked if he posts an era over 6. That's just not going to work. qwerty
Garland is a garbage, plain and simple. It was all too predictable that he would post the best numbers of his career last year... i have been calling him to do that since after the 2005 season. Many though he turned the corner... but i knew he was gonna cash in and go back looking lazy and like he does not care out there. He cashed in now and will go back to being league average pitcher ( was exactly 100 going into the 2005 season)... probally worse... for double the salary he made last season. He cries and blames players on his own team, cries when he gets booed... and cannot take criticism. Garland sucks and i cannot wait until the day he is gone. YASNY
This is totally being interpretted out of context. Here's some more quotes from Garland that put things in a different light. “I understand,” he said. “You win a World Series and myself, go out and win 18 games, and of course the fans want to see it every game and win every single game and shut a team down. Basically, that’s impossible. “The expectations are there, and they are even higher now that we’ve won. It’s not going to go anywhere as long as I’m in this game. “I blame myself for everything that happened (Thursday),” he said. “I’m not going to point my finger at anyone else. I’m the one who has the ball in his hand. I’m the one who pitches. I’ll look at myself.”
SoxFan1
He can sob all he wants. At least Anderson is giving us some kind of production with his solid defense. Garland just throws hanging breaking balls and 2-seamers over the heart of the plate. Jeez Jon, shut the f*** up and pitch...better. If he looks at himself, than what is he crying about? Fix it. Must have some wierd mirror.

WCSox
QUOTE(greg775 @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 07:05 PM) I can't remember a more hated White Sox player except maybe Royce Clayton. The guy is a decent No. 4, 5 pitcher. Why do people hate him so? I don't think anybody here "hates" Garland. People are upset because Jon came into the league with a lot of hype and took forever to develop into a good pitcher. After doing so, he was rewarded with a generous contract and responded by pitching like Jamie Navarro. Jon's not nearly as bad as this year's numbers suggest, but he's not that great either. He has mediocre stuff and gets hit hard when he doesn't locate well or his sinker flattens out. In other words, he has to really be on to be the guy that we saw last year. And as we saw in his last start, Garland also has the tendency to lose focus on the mound when he gets a few bad breaks. It's difficult for fans to defend a guy like that when he says anything at all to the press about booing. I like Jon as a person and hope that he gets through this, but he needs to STFU about fan reaction. Even if it's justified, don't say ANYTHING nevative at all about the fans to the press. There's more support for Anderson than Garland. That amazes me. That might have to do with the fact that (1) Anderson's a rookie, (2) he's an excellent CF, and (3) he doesn't whine about the fans booing him when he doesn't execute. Then maybe he needs to say "no comment" instead of complaining about fan expectations. Common sense would dictate that a pitcher with a 6.19 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and .310 BAA shouldn't be saying anything negative about the fans at all. Apparently Jon lacks common sense. WCSox
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 11, 2006 -> 10:21 AM) He isnt complaining about fan expectations... You didn't read his quote... "Basically, I was getting tired of hearing, 'Why aren't you as good as you were last year?'" Garland said. "It just gets old. "I probably am just as good as I have been in the past years. It's one of those things where the little things just aren't happening." "I do. I understand." "You win a World Series and myself, go out and win 18 games, and of course the fans want to see it every game and want you to win every single game and shut a team down. "Basically, that's impossible. The expectations are there and they are even higher now that we've won. It's not going to go anywhere as long as I'm in this game. Jon is clearly whining about fan expectations and is making himself look like an ass in the process. He's complained about booing in the past as well. If he'd simply not go there, he wouldn't have these problems. Edited June 11, 2006 by WCSox

To me he is saying the expectations are high and he isnt reaching them atm... and he knows it but is sick of being asked questions about it every game. And its dumb for people to say well if your sick of it why dont you start pitching better.... because that would be making the assumption he isnt trying to pitch good which is kind of dumb if you think about it. To me he is saying the expectations are high and he isnt reaching them atm... and he knows it but is sick of being asked questions about it every game. Then I guess that almost everyone else in this thread misinterpreted the quote as well. He wouldn't have to deal with fans "misinterpreting" his remarks if he wouldn't say anything in the first place. When Jon says stuff like, ""You win a World Series and myself, go out and win 18 games, and of course the fans want to see it every game and want you to win every single game... Basically, that's impossible.", it's almost concescending. Yeah, no s***, Sherlock. You're not going to win every game. Everyone over age 10 knows this. He's also misdirecting the issue: Fans aren't upset with him because he's not repeating 2005... they're upset because he's been awful this year. What he's doing now has nothing to do with the WS or his 2005 stats and for him to even bring it up is just flat-out asinine. And its dumb for people to say well if your sick of it why dont you start pitching better.... because that would be making the assumption he isnt trying to pitch good which is kind of dumb if you think about it. What's "dumb" to me is him being sick of answering questions when he has $29 million in the bank. You don't like it, Jon? I'll gladly switch places with you. Jon needs to put up or shut up. If he can't handle answering questions or the way that the fans treat him when he's pitching poorly, he needs to find a new line of work. GoodAsGould
Thats because everyone on this board and sports fans in general tend to over-react over every little thing... we have the 2nd best record in the majors and sometimes with the attitude you see on this board you would think we are 3rd or 4th in our division and not close to making the playoffs.
