Dictionary: Elude Well, as far as I can tell, that is an accepted usage of the word "Elude". Not the most common one, but it's at least included by several dictionaries (not all). Actually, I misread the original statement. Definition 1 of Elude should fit well with what Gergen was saying, as far as I can tell. He Eluded, evaded, escaped prosecution. All seem to fit to me.
