AddisonStSox Posted June 15, 2006 Share Posted June 15, 2006 Anytime you trade one of the left-handed "pitchers" brought in for the 2006 left-handed reliever competition for a certifiable MLB talent, you've improved your MLB club. Lopez had no future in this organization. If he wasn't called up after the Boone Logan experiment or after call-ups including 40 year old rookie Agustin Montero, Sean Tracey, and someone who was out of the game of baseball after having been cut by the Cardinals in spring training, he wasn't ever going to get the call. Hopefully this trade pays dividens in terms of that right-handed set-up situation. He is a veteran, he has an expiring contract after the 2006 season...there is no down-side here. Francona, before last night's game, talked about the need for a reliever to pitch against lefties and mentioned Delcarmen as a leading candidate. But Delcarmen, who had allowed only four hits in 17 at-bats against lefties (a .235 average), fell behind, 3 and 1, to Morneau. ``He jumped on the next fastball and cleared the bases," Delcarmen said succinctly. ``Can't fall behind and expect to get somebody out." I understand the skepticism regarding Levine, but, after the Vizquel fiasco, the guy has been completely professional. He's not going to make that mistake again. Don't have to play the match-up game with him as he's held LH hitters under a .200 baa the last 3 seasons (average). Righties hitting .233. Jenks claimed off waivers last year. Neal Cotts was a throw in to a trade a few years back. It is not as though we have payed a high premium for a solid bullpen. Jenks-Cotts-McCarthy-Riske-Thornton looks like a damn good bullpen to me. These are the type of guys we need inthe bullpen, we don't need the lidge's of the world, just give solid arms that will keep us in the game. But this is a deal you do any day of the week. Also on a side note, good for Javier Lopez to get another major league shot, it's been said he's been nothing but professional and a major positive influence in Charlotte. This is one reason to bring in a lot of these non roster guys in spring training, most will be junk but every once in a while one turns into an asset to use or trade. C'mon, man, we've got the best trainer in the game in Herm Schneider. Don't go by the back injuries our players have because Herm's back is a total mess and Crede had herniated disks, which a trainer can't do much about during the season. PLUS, look at the "injury risks" the Sox have picked up over the last couple of years: Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye.
