Rex Hudler
This is a little dated since it happened a month ago, but I just found out this week. Skip Bundy was "good people". He was often scouting games at the Hoover Met and was a pleasure to be around. He scouted minor league players every year after the June amateur draft. I sat with him many times discussing different players, the game and life in general. He was always smiling and accomodating to anyone that wanted to discuss baseball. He was also a long-time customer of my company. I was very disappointed to hear the news. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Skip Bundy, a former scout with the Devil Rays, and Edgar Ramirez, one of the Rays' original minor leaguer players and a current instructor with the organization, both passed away today. Bundy, 61, died of congestive heart failure in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Ramirez, 28, was killed in an automobile accident in the early morning hours near the town of his birth, San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic. Bundy spent 22 years as a major league scout with the Rays, Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners. He was with the Rays as an area scout from 1995 through 2005. While with Kansas City, Bundy was the part-time scout responsible for signing Bo Jackson. Prior to scouting, Bundy was a high school coach and principal at Leeds (AL) High School where he the basketball coach for future NBA great Charles Barkley. He is survived by his wife, Darlyce. The couple has no children. Funeral arrangements are pending. "I didn't know anybody that didn't like and respect Skip Bundy," said Rays Scouting Director R.J. Harrison. "He was a wonderful man and a great guy to be around. He did a fine job for us." Edited June 17, 2006 by Rex Hudler
