It is sad that people do not realize that as far as the fan voting goes, the only reason Rodriguez was voted in was to make sure that Varitek and his bad numbers would not be rewarded, and it's hard to not pick a second catcher who is batting almost .400 through half a season. A.J.'s contributions definitely had to be recognized, and if it had to be in a 32-man setting, so be it. (Though in all honesty, if Joe Crede was on the ballot, I would have voted him over either Verlander or Liriano). Anyway, the other reason to be glad about this is that Pudge doesn't have to catch for even a half-game due to A.J.'s entrance to the game. I apologize if the previous quote is unclear... I was referring to Mauer as "the second catcher", as he was the one chosen in the player/manager naming session, and AJ is now officially the AL's third catcher. Though to me it is still amazing that other baseball fans have a problem with his selection... AJ's .325 is a great average, and the OBP/SLG (.369/.424) he has is solid at the very least. But Mauer (the "second catcher") is currently at .391/.459/.544. It's hard to ignore that, especially from a catcher, and when you can really only pick one other catcher, you have to go for the guy who may have an outside chance at .400. The final player vote was designed to allow for oversight, and while I'm sure Chicagoans voted heavily for A.J. I won't pretend that those were the only votes he received... he is a good player, received votes throughout the nation, and while there are a lot of people who deserve to be All-Stars he does too. In all honesty, it would have been nice if the All-Star voters weren't so fixated on previous results. I would have loved to have seen Mauer voted in, because he really is the best, and then have a good legitimate second catcher (be it A.J. or Victor Martinez, etc.) chosen rather than have Pudge in there. Catcher is a really rough position, and I would not have minded to see BOTH Martinez and AJ in there with Mauer, really, because they all have been outstanding. I don't think that Pudge's stats this year really qualify him as an All-Star, though I am happy that he ended up in there over Varitek. And yeah, I am a Tigers homer saying this. But hey, it's really a popularity contest no matter what, and while it does end up deciding home-field I can't imagine that the AL will need a ton of home-field advantage to take care of the NL this year. And it will be a novel experience for me, as I will again root for Ozzie Guillen for the first time in quite a while.
