& Cash Considerations

Eh.. why not.. dont really care.. needed some help.. dont know if he'll give it to us but Evans held no spot on any Cardinals team for us IMO. OTOH - Not thrilled but maybe it'll light a fire under the team!

Expected to join team in Houston!

since Weaver was designated for assingment and now traded, are the Angles still on the hook for his salary or does that go to the Cards now?

I'm guessing the "cash considerations" is covering all but the minimum.

Similar to when the Twins traded for Bret Boone after he was DFA.

You remember that don't you? :P

If the Angels aren't sending them cash, than the Cards would be picking up everything. Of course I think the Angels are picking up a good deal of salary and this is a no brainer for the Cards who are desperate for pitching and when Weaver is on he's pretty damn solid.

Cardinals acquire RHP Jeff Weaver from Angels

Redbirds send Minor Leaguer Terry Evans to the Halos

ST. LOUIS, MO., July 5, 2006 -- The St. Louis Cardinals announced early this evening that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Jeff Weaver and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for minor league outfielder Terry Evans. Weaver is expected to join the Cardinals roster this coming weekend in Houston.

Weaver, who will turn 30 in August, was designated for assignment by the Angels last week after going 3-10 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 games. Weaver worked into the 6th inning in 12 of his 16 starts for the Angels this year while compiling 88.2 IP with 62 strikeouts. He made his final start for the Angels on June 27.

The 6-5, 200-pound former number one draft choice (Detroit-1998) has compiled a career mark of 81-97 with a 4.55 ERA in 1484.2 innings pitched. He is just one strikeout shy of 1,000 for his career.

"We feel that Weaver is someone who can come in and lend immediate help and depth to our rotation," said Cardinals' Senior Vice President/General Manager Walt Jocketty. "Tony, (La Russa) and Dave Duncan have studied plenty of video from his starts, and feel that Jeff is still a very capable pitcher."

Mentioning about Sidney.. he did good last night actually.. it's too bad that bum Aaron Miles is starting still

FREE HECTOR LUNA!!

God who was it that freaked out over the Miles/Uribe deal, and was telling us how awesome Miles was going to be and how we were going to regret ever trading him... etc???

Ponson DFA

The other shoe, in the form of Sidney Ponson, dropped today. Jeff Weaver arrived in the clubhouse this afternoon, and by MLB rules he had to be activated once he arrived. That meant a move was required.

The move, as many people expected, was that Sidney Ponson was designated for assignment -- the same thing that happened to Weaver with the Angels. The Cards now have 10 days to trade Ponson, release him or send him outright to the Minor Leagues. He'd have to accept being outrighted, which is extremely unlikely.

Weaver will throw a bullpen today. He'll probably throw a simulated game or perhaps a bullpen on Sunday, and get a start after the break.

-M.
