Series Preview: White Sox vs. Red Sox

By Zach Hansen

The White Sox will be welcoming the Boston Red Sox into Chicago, for the final series of the first half. With Thome-Konerko-Dye and Ortiz-Ramirez-Varitek, this series features the two best lineup triads in baseball. Boston will be coming into Chicago with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. The favored Red Sox were swept by the White Sox in the 2005 ALDS, and some outspoken members of Boston’s team feel slighted by manager Ozzie Guillen’s All-Star selections (despite having four representatives).

Tampa came within ............ sweeping 4 from these pussies. If we dont get AT LEAST 2 of 3 I'll be shocked.

RIP EM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, Vazquez and Garcia won't be pitching. As long as Ozzie doesn't foolishly throw Politte out there, we should take 2 of 3.

NM then. I don't like his chances at all against Boston.

Well, it is a day game. Beckett has been giving up a lot of home runs as well. One team will probably have to out slug the other rather than one pitcher shutting the other team down.

That being said, the score will probably end up being 1-0.

DH - edge Boston (statistically even, but Papi has a ton of GW hits and a few more RBI)

No way, check out their stats with RISP:

Thome (65 ABs, 9 HR, 46 RBI, .385 BA, .505 OBP, .846 SLG, 1.352 OPS)

Ortiz (94 ABs, 7 HR, 49 RBI, .277 BA, .405 OBP, .532 SLG, .937 OPS)

Ortiz has had 29 more ABs with runners in scoring position, and he gets a lot more SportsCenter coverage for every single hit.

VORP

Thome 39.1 > Ortiz 31.2

Home 5-1, 64.0 IP, 20 ER, 19 BB, 31 K, 2.81 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, .224 BAA

BOS Batters vs Buehrle

(Crisp 10-26, .385 BA, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K)

(Ortiz 13-37, .351 BA, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K)

(Ramirez 8-18, .444 BA, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 6 BB, 3 K)

(Varitek 9-20, .450 BA, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 0 K)

-----

Jon Lester 3-0, 26.1 IP, 9 ER, 17 BB, 27 K, 3.08 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, .247 BAA

vs LH Batter .182 BAA, 1.25 WHIP

vs RH Batter .256 BAA, 1.61 WHIP

Away 1-0, 11.0 IP, 3 ER, 6 BB, 8 K, 2.45 ERA, .293 BAA

No White Sox batter has faced Jon Lester

Edge – Even (Buehrle is better at home, but the heart of Boston’s order has hit Buehrle hard; Lester has a suspect WHIP and Away BAA that may be exposed against Chicago's hitters)

Lefty Relief Pitchers

Cotts 34.0 IP, 10 ER, 10 BB, 25 K, 2.65 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, .205 BAA

Thornton 28.1 IP 11 ER, 11 BB, 30 K, 3.49 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, .202 BAA

-----

Lopez 6.1 IP, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 4.26 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, .211 BAA

Edge – Chicago (Lopez is the lone Lefty out of the pen for Boston)

Righty Relief Pitchers

Riske 9.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 1.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, .188 BAA

McCarthy 42.1 IP, 21 ER, 13 BB, 29 K, 4.46 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, .252 BAA

Politte 26.1 IP, 25 ER, 13 BB, 13 K, 8.54 ERA, 2.09 WHIP, .359 BAA

-----

Timlin 29.1 IP, 8 ER, 8 BB, 17 K, 2.45 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, .265 BAA

Declarmen 20.0 IP, 9 ER, 7 BB, 18 K, 4.05 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, .295 BAA

Hansen 9.1 IP, 5 ER, 3 BB, 10 K, 4.82 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, .222 BAA

Seanez 31.0 IP, 17 ER, 14 BB, 36 K, 4.94 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, .270 BAA

Tavarez 42.1 IP, 24 ER, 19 BB, 26 K, 5.10 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, .281 BAA

Edge – Even (Boston has more options and they don’t have Politte; Riske has been very effective in a short period of time.... for Chicago)

Closer

Jenks 38.2 IP, 11 ER, 11 BB, 47 K, 2.56 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, .220 BAA

Papelbon 42.2 IP, 2 ER, 7 BB, 43 K, 0.42 ERA, 0.68 WHIP, .149 BAA

Edge – Boston (This one is close, but only 2 ER and 7 BBs in 42 IP is pretty impressive. Both teams will need to score before these two get in the game)

Teams

Chicago Home 32-12, .289 Team BA, 4.41 Team ERA

Boston Away 24-22, .283 Team BA, 4.59 Team ERA

Overall Edge - Chicago (The teams and positions match up pretty even with the edge going to Chicago)

OMFG WILLIE HARRIS!

Remember . . . Willie Harris scored the winning run for the Sox in game 4. Don't mock him too much

I've been looking forward to this series for a long time, I already have my tickets for when the Pale Hose come to Fenway. Should be a good one
