WaPo.

"Look, we're used to it — 25 years, 26 years it's been like this," Hassan Qaryani, a 21-year-old butcher from Burj Rahal, said of the airstrikes. The kidnapping, he said, was "like a crown on my head . . . as soon as I heard the news I was overjoyed. It was like Italy winning the World Cup."

In the southern suburbs of Beirut, people handed out candy in the streets and set off fireworks. Fireworks also were set off on the airport road, snarling traffic.

I hope he is overjoyed when the maverick missle brings down the house across the street. I hope they are giving candy out when the tanks roll through.

What a bunch of retards. Praising a kidnapping like they won the world cup.

They won't be jumping for joy when the Israeli fireworks start flying. Latest news says Israel may target

sites in Syria, too.

What do you guys think the odds are that this expands into a wider war in the region?

If Israel were to launch a large scale attack on Syria, I'd say it'd be very likely. It might be able to be contained to just an operation in lebanon if they don't. My big worry might be the fact that there's already 1 civil war on in that region, and a 2nd simmering conflict would probably feed into that, and make both situations worse.

This conflict can be contained if Iran wants it to be contained. After all they are the puppeteer of Hezbollah

and to a greater extent the Lebanese Gov't. But, from listening to Ahmadinejad speak, I get the sense that

Iran will not intervene anytime soon.

There's a real obvious joke about the Israeli bomb there which I'm not going to take...

Actually, I was refering to Israeli F-16's dropping conventional ordnance on Damascus

and Hezbollah targets in Syria. Not the A-Bomb. Israel is not that stupid, nor are they likely to use an

A-bomb on Syria. I believe the more likely target to be Iran.

I highly doubt that this conflict will be nuclear in nature. Israel has not disclosed its weapons of mass destruction, although it is assumed that they have all three letters of the NBC variety.

Today they bombed the Beirut airport. This whole situation just makes me sad to think about it.

The LAT ran with some interesting details on the actual attack that led to the capture of the 2 soliders this morning.

In seizing the soldiers, Hezbollah staged what Israeli military officials acknowledged was a highly sophisticated, multi-pronged attack, a hallmark of the guerrilla group's operations during its long fight against Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah, which has since become a significant force in Lebanese politics, remains, in effect, the governing power in Lebanon's Shiite-dominated south.

Under cover of rocket and shell fire at northern Israeli hamlets and border army outposts, the guerrillas sprayed gunfire at two armored Israeli jeeps patrolling the frontier. It was at the site of that attack, which left three soldiers dead, that the two Israelis were captured, Israeli news reports said.

Israeli commanders, perhaps mindful that an army investigation of Shalit's capture had faulted troops at the scene for responding too slowly, ordered a hot pursuit into Lebanon.

Once across the border, however, Israeli forces fell into an ambush. A tank drove over powerful explosives laid in its path about three miles inside Lebanon, and four soldiers died in the blast. A fifth was killed trying to recover the stricken tank.

Multiple ambushes aimed at the Israelis. This took some serious planning on their part.

So they invaded Israel attacked, killed, and kidnapped soldiers, all while bombing northern Israel? Sounds to me like it is war already. You are right, this wasn't a couple of guy lobbing some missles or taking advantage of a random encounter, this was a preplanned, preemptive strike by Hezbollah.

Don't tell that to Russia and France.

This is from a drudge link so take it FWIW, but supposedly the soliders might be sent to Iran.

Man, I'm struggling to find anything which could possibly be worse than that.

It's also a Jerusalem post article, citing an unsourced leak from within the IDF, which means that either the IDF believes there's some nugget of truth to it, or the IDF is leaking it on purpose regardless of whether or not there is truth to it to try to build consensus for adding Iran to the list. And either way, the prospect is abjectly awful.

If these guys get moved to Iran. Then Iran and Israel will be at war.

That was sort of implied when I said I couldn't figure out anything worse than that. Beyond the $100 a barrel oil prices, think about what will happen when the Shi'ites in Iraq who make up the majority of the government decide that their country needs to stand with Iran, and the U.S. doesn't want them to?

Too bad a lot of people in Iran aren't "islamofascists".

by "a lot of people" are you referring to the iranian government, which funds hezbollah, who are terrorists, or are you just referring to the hezbollah installments the israelis are attacking right now to get back kidnapped soldiers? and how is hezbollah not a terrorist organization?

Are all terrorists by definition Islamofascists?

Ok this is my own little conspiracy theory... I have nothing to back this up, but the logic does seem to flow. Assume the following:

1) Israel and the Palestinians have been at odds since 1948.

2) Full fledged war in the Middle East has been close several times since then.

3) Israel has had the grounds to strike at Hezbollah, Hamas, etc virtually the entire time.

4) Iran is presently developing Nuclear weapons

5) No nation is more threatened by Iran's development of WMD than Israel.

6) Any military action by Iran would almost certainly be met with overwhelming defense by Israel.

7) Iran has sworn to defend Syria, Hezbollah, etc.

8) An unprovoked assault on Iran by the US or Israel would be met with great resistance internationally.

If Isreal can literally provoke a war with Hezbollah, Syria, etc, Iran will probably jump to their defense. Israel's acts are "self-defense" and therefore justifiable. Once Iran is inevitably drawn in, Iran can be struck by Israel (and possibly the U.S). Thus ending the threat of nuclear weapons in Iran.

Is Israel's real objective to stir Iran into this skirmish so that they have the international grounds to strike Iran? I don't know... but it seems plausible.
