Everyone's eligible, right? Buffon deserved it more. Jmho. Or is it something like MVP/Cy Young, how a CY is essentially a 'pitcher's MVP'?

Nope, Golden Ball and Golden Boot.

Golden Ball = Overall MVP = Zinedine Zidane/France

Golden Boot = Most Goals = Miroslav Klose/Germany

Right, but there's a 'best goalkeeper' award, too, I think. Just saying, Zidane was good, but I think calling him the best player is a stretch. (Even if one -- somehow -- ignores the shameful display at the end.)

I would have done the same thing as he (Zidane) did only after the Cup, but would have done the ol' American tradition and punched him (Materazzi) in the face. Donkey, good comparison of Materazzi and AJ but, imo, I don't think AJ would use a racial slur/terroist/etc.. to someone in a baseball game.

Some good videos of Materazzi's exploits are on Youtube. He's like the AJ of soccer.

I dont know about that comparison, AJ may be annoying to other teams, but he isnt dirty. Materazzi is a dirty player.

Still an unbelievably dumb move by Zidane and a horrible way to end an amazing career.

Talk about a meathead. Oh Boo Hoo someone said something to him, so he just had to react and headbut the guy. What a weak minded wuss. This guy would get eaten alive if he played some american sports where trash talking is part of the game.

So whats the over/under on the amount of time that it would take Zindane to headbut AJ or Rodman.

I would've head butted the guy in the face. I mean you're gonna get the red card and you're retiring anyway, so :huh

Yeah, I really shouldn't be so hard on AJ. Alot of people THINK AJ is a dirty player though sadly. On the other side, Zidane is alot classier than a Michael Barrett, and probably regrets his actions a whole lot more.

At the time, the commentators were saying that maybe none of the refs had witnessed the headbutt firsthand. I was pretty surprised something like that was replayed on the jumbotron.

Materazzi admits he insulted Zidane before head butt

MILAN, Italy (ESPNSoccernet.com news services) -- Marco Materazzi acknowledged he insulted Zinedine Zidane before the French captain head-butted him in the World Cup final, but repeated his denial that he called Zidane a "terrorist."

"I did insult him, it's true," Materazzi said in Tuesday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "But I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I'm not cultured and I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is."

A Paris-based anti-racism group issued a statement Monday saying Materazzi had called Zidane, whose parents emigrated to France from Algeria, a "dirty terrorist."

FIFA announced Tuesday it would open a disciplinary investigation into the circumstances of Zidane's head butt.

"FIFA will open a disciplinary investigation into Zidane's conduct to enable it to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident as exactly as possible," world soccer's governing body said in a statement.

Zidane and Materazzi exchanged words in extra-time of Sunday's final in Berlin. Seconds later, Zidane lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground. Zidane was ejected from the match.

"I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned round and spoke to me, sneering," the Italian defender told the newspaper. "He looked me up and down, arrogantly and said: 'If you really want my shirt, I'll give it to you afterwards.'"

The 32-year-old Inter Milan player did not elaborate on exactly what he said to Zidane.

"It was one of those insults you're told tens of times and that always fly around the pitch," he said.

He's a thug, it's not the first time he's done it.

Yep, and not being around for penalty kicks in his last World Cup final also = balls.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Ya, Cheapshotting=balls.

Some sarcasm doesn't need green. :P

And, that guy can't be serious: "I'm not cultured, I don't know what a terrorist is."

Yeah, f*** you.

Yeah, it's bulls***, but who cares? Whatever Materazzi said, I don't believe for a minute it's the first time Zidane's heard it in all his years in soccer. If anything were that effective, people would have been saying it for years, and Zidane would have never reached halftime. I'm tired of everyone looking for the exact quote as if it were an excuse for what Zidane did.

Worry about kids saying s*** on a playground, not about pro athletes saying it for the exact purpose of getting in someone's head.

I wasn't defending him or anything.

I did enjoy his headbutt, but only because it's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. It's got comic relief.

I wasn't really saying you were, I just don't get why everyone's talking about this. Whatever he said, I'm sure it was pretty bad. That's exactly why you say it.

Yup, now they are considering taking the Golden Ball away from him.

I think that'd be BS. They should've thought better of it in the first place.

I mean, I know the League doesn't give it out and journalists do, but still. If already given, it should stand.
