What was the Point of Clemente "award" last nite?

They stopped the game last nite, with Bud Selig going on about how great Roberto Clemente was, talking about his humanitarian work and play on the field. Didnt baseball already do this? Dont they already have an award for him? (Roberto Clemente award) What was the point of this award? What we saw last nite Already happened a number of years ago. I was not clear, but seems Mr Selig wasnt informed that the Clemente family already received recognition for Robertos achievements

The only thing I think is that they should of had it in the pre-game ceremonies. Just before the 1st pitch, instead of interrupting the game. They can honor him as much as they want, he was a hell of a guy who deserves all of the props he gets. He truly was a great man. This was held in Pittsburg, and this is one of their most well known players. I see no problem with the recognition. Maybe the timing was a bit off as the game had already started.

The whole thing was Selig-esque/been there-done that. They can honor him, but unless its for something different, or a new award or something of that nature, I didnt see what the point was, because THEY DID THIS already. Thats like the SOX having a 1983 Tribute next week, getting all the players together, talk about the accomplishments etc etc. Or having a Carlton Fisk Tribute day again, complete with Statue dedication and talk about his accomplishments etc etc. That shouldve been done before the game, not in the middle of the contest. It was a gratuitious pr stunt by Selig and MLB. If they wanted to do something, have a Clemente Scholarship awarded to anyone in the Pittsburgh area or something a bit more original than the "he was great, heres a trophy" schtick that the MLB braintrust seems to think is forward thinking.

i cant imagine it might have had something to do with the fact that the all star game was played in pittsburg... ya think?

nothing wrong with honoring one of the greatest ballplayers and human beings of all time in his "home" town at the allstar break.

the award was the commissioner's historic achievement award, not the roberto clemente award. the clemente award is recognizing a player who gives back to the community, in the spirit of clemente.

Exactly, thank you, the award has been handed out only 8-9 times previously and it was the perfect venue and time to honor Clemente.

I didnt catch it ( I didnt start watching until the 6th inning) but maybe MLB thought they would have more eyes on the tv during the game instead of during a pregame show, thus more eyes being aware of what a great baseball player/humantairian/influence Clemente had when he was alive

I agree with Hangar that the timing of the ceremony was a bit bizarre. Why not a pre-game, widow tosses the first pitch type of deal.

I was really pissed when they didn't announce that they were retiring his number. It would of been such a perfect time. In fact im still pissed, what the hell is he thinking about handing out this award that is nothing compared to his number being retired and remebered forever. Am i the only one that feels this way?

Some of his company in receiving that award isn't exactly who I'd want to be lumped in with. Three juicers and as far as I'm concerned Sosa with or without juice doesn't deserve that kind of award.

Ahhh, I see. So this is a "historic achievement" award. So it took baseball 34 years to recognize his achievements? heh heh. I dont mind Clemente getting this award, but maybe they couldve given to him Opening Day of 73. Or 75. Or 79. Or when the AllStar Game was there back in the 90's? Selig and MLB were looking for their Gratuitious moment, they shoudlve named a Scholarship after him. That wouldve made more sense I think ........

IMO I think they did it during the game to ease some of the pressure to retire the number league-wide. There was a major push, including I believe a 100,000 signature petition to get it retired, and I don't think MLB wants to do it, so they performed this cermemony

(Note: This is NOT my opinion about retiring the number, this is just my opinion on why it was handled in the manner it was)
