beautox
QUOTE(R.J. @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 03:29 PM) Holy god is this a robbery. And adding Ryan Wagner to the deal is icing on the cake. Whether they intended to or not, this makes the Reds the 4th best team in that division and huge huge sellers in this market. This has white flag written all over it and I just can't understand what they were hoping to achieve by this. man...i really wanted Coop to get his hands on Wagner....Damn! Jordan4life_2007
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 03:12 PM) Congratulations to the NL Central champion St Loius Cardinals... I wouldn't count out the Astros. This is their time of the season. And, unlike the last two years, they're actually close enough to where another one of their prolific second half runs can net them a division title. beautox
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 03:32 PM) I have a question. I've heard a lot on this board about Ryan Wagner and how great he is. Why, exactly, was he not in the Reds' bullpen? Is he still just a prospect with a high ceiling? Or was he already in the majors and fell out of favor with the management? ill break it down for ya milk, Ryan Wagner has been absolutely bad at AAA, and is no longer on there top 20 prospect list hes only 23, he was the reds first round draft choice in '03. He reminds me alot of Matt Thornton in the sense that he has a ton of potential but its being wasted within the reds organization and hes faced ML hitting before, much like Matt with the M's. Ryan's problems aren't mental, they're mechanical. This would be a classic Coop turn around special a la Thornton/Cotts/Jose. He features a 84-87 mph slider that tops out at an 80 on the scale, and also a 91-94 mph sinking fastball. You can read more about him here. redandwhite
Bray is a future closer in this league, but the rest is pretty much terrible. The Red's got hosed, and its not because all the name power in this deal. It's because the best player involved thats coming to Cincinatti, Bill Bray, might not pan out while Kearns and Lopez are excellent players. I can't see the Reds trading Griffey or Dunn now. maggliopipe
Well I guess this does open up regular playing time for Ryan Freel at shortstop. They can't possibly play Clayton over him, can they?
fathom
QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 09:29 PM) Well I guess this does open up regular playing time for Ryan Freel at shortstop. They can't possibly play Clayton over him, can they? Freel will get a lot more playing time in the outfield now. They're bringing in Clayton to sure up their defense. Hangar18
One of my coworkers just got off the phone with a company we deal with out of Cincinnati, and they are livid over this "trade".
redandwhite
Actually upon further review, I've warmed up to it. The Reds have a better chance at winning the division now post trade. I'd imagine Phillips will shift to short, Harris will play second, and Freel will finally have a spot in the outfield. Couple that with Majewski and Bray out of the pen. Congratulations, Cincinatti. You're now going to win the division.
Balta1701
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 02:36 PM) Congratulations, Cincinatti. You're not going to win the division. Fixed. You were one letter off.
jackie hayes
QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 05:29 PM) Well I guess this does open up regular playing time for Ryan Freel at shortstop. They can't possibly play Clayton over him, can they? You figure if they got Clayton, they must want to use him for something. But someone on Redszone suggested they'll try Brandon Phillips there, and supposedly they're calling up William Bergolla, who, with exactly 1 chance at short last year, has almost as much career ss experience as Phillips, and more than Freel. Plus, Aurilia's still around. The Phillies obsess about relievers, the Reds, middle infielders. Go figure.

redandwhite
Weren't the Reds one of the worst teams in baseball defensively? Man, an hour goes by, and I'm actually warming up to this deal. Chisoxfn
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 11:43 AM) ESPN is reporting that the Reds trade A. Kearns, F. Lopez, and R. Wagner to the Nationals for 5 players, including Royce Clayton, Majewski, and a few others. What in the hell are the Reds thinking? Lopez is one of the more productive SS in the National League. Giving up Lopez for all that is sheer garbage. They need relievers and Majewski will help them but it makes no sense to give up Lopez. I think you could have worked a Kearns and a spect for Majewksi (if not straight up).
Dick Allen
I would think, defensive deficiencies or not, Lopez and Kearns are worth more than Majewski, Bray, Harris, and Royce "cancer" Clayton. I think the Sox traded Majewski 2 or 3 times, and they released Clayton. The Nationals gave up 4 very average, ordinary players. Kearns could be a 30 homer guy. Lopez could be a 20 homer 30 steal guy, an Alfonso Soriano lite.

Why, exactly, was he not in the Reds' bullpen? Is he still just a prospect with a high ceiling? Or was he already in the majors and fell out of favor with the management? redandwhite
"I personally love it," Reds utility player Ryan Freel said. "I'm not knocking Kearns and Lopez, but we all knew that most of the problem has been with the bullpen."
Dick Allen
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 05:21 PM) "I personally love it," Reds utility player Ryan Freel said. "I'm not knocking Kearns and Lopez, but we all knew that most of the problem has been with the bullpen." I saw that quote. I wonder what he loves more, seeing Gary Majewski enter the game from the bullpen, or the fact that his view of watching him enter will be from the playing field not the dugout. Dick Allen
If the price for mediocre pitching is this high, KW should dangle Vazquez and Fields, someone I believe is Joe Borchard Jr. and whose stock will probably never be higher for a package that will most likely improve the White Sox chances this year and in the future.
