The Frank Thomas signing was the ultimate Billy Beane signing.

A lifetime OPS of .991 for, what, $1M?

Give me a break.

He hadn't been healthy for years and you're telling me Bean thought he was getting 1994 Frank Thomas? Thomas has been hitting home runs but can barely run, at this point Soriano wouldn't be a terrible option for them.

And if Bean sees the value of a 200 inning pitcher, then Garcia and Vasquez would meet that standard.

Lets look at the rumors today. First we are close to aqquring Soriano, and then we are looking at Lee also. Maybe the Nats are insistant that we give up bmac, and we want to give up broadway instead. Get two people intererested in your prospects and see if the Nats go for it.

If they can get Soriano and dont have to give up Bmac that would be a nice deal.

WSCR 4:30 pm update says the White Sox are exploring deals for both Soriano and Lee with the intent of flipping them. Meaning, one or the other, not acquiring/flipping both. For what it's worth.

No, but there's more of a guarantee involving the production of certain minor league pitchers. Every season there's players you look at and know they'll produce. How often does a team have that guarantee with winning a world series?

MacDougal helps us more now, and perhaps the next two, but what about the following seven to nine with Lumsden? There's nothing wrong with thinking about winning now and preserving your team in the future. I like the idea of sustaining success with a strong group of minor leaguers capable of replacing current players.

If MacDougal didn't have injury concerns and Kansas City weren't in the division I'd be less reluctant to criticize the move.

You mean you'd be more reluctant to criticize the move, right?

The Brewers want McCarthy too. From what I've heard, nearly every team that see McCarthy, want him.

Why flip Soriano? If we can sign him, why flip him? We are going to draw more fans than ever this season, why wouldn't we sign him. Soriano is one of those players that are coveted. While his defense isn't great, everything else about him is.

I'd see Soriano as an upgrade over Pods. Still a defensive liability, but a definite offensive upgrade.

Every team in baseball wants McCarthy, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't.

i just cant see why....the only teams that are gonna want soriano are contenders, and no contender is gonna be willing to deal us (or anyone) pitching.......

My theory. SOriano makes our offense NASTY. So, if we get him and CANT turn him around, the Sox would be ok with that BUT, would rather turn him around for someone.

But who do we flip him for? Soriano is an A+ player, I don't know who we would get that is better than or equal to him.

I'd love to see the ratio of minor league pitchers who made it to the big show to the number who flopped and compare it to the number of defending world champs to make the playoffs the next year to the number of teams who stay home in October.

I'm willing to bet that second ratio is A TON greater than the first ratio Flash. Especially when you toss in the new divisional format and the fact Tyler had injury problems costing him his first pro season.

Beacause those teams are rebuilding, or looking for young starting pitching. They aren't in the thick of a playoff race with World Series repeat aspirations.

Yep, it doesn't make sense at all. McCarthy's about as good of a young pitcher as you can seriously consider to get in a deal like this. I sure hope KW knows what he's doing....and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Is it possible we could flip him for Ervin Santana? But of course in that scenario, who goes to the bullpen? I dont know, I'm just throwing this out there.

Cuz we don't need him offensively. We already have the highest run scoring team in baseball. Just because we're not hitting now doesn't mean we won't hit for the rest of the year. Soriano could bring a major starting pitcher if flipped.

KW on the radio right now, says McCarthy is going nowhere. Brief soundbyte on the 4:40 AM1000 update.

You have to wonder why a team would consider trading Soriano through us rather than the Nationals.

We'd likely be providing a piece for another club which the Nationals can't offer. Who could that be?

I believe everything will fall together rather quickly now. Wouldn't be surprised if an announcement of a huge trade, and the move thereafter, were made before the day ended. I hope not, but if anything will happen I couldn't imagine it lingering on any longer.

Kenny Williams just said to reporters that he WILL NOT be trading McCarthy. I don't even know if I should believe him anymore.

That sound you hear is the sigh of relief of thousands of Sox fans.

Phew.
