I don't know what ERA+ means.

ERA measured against the league average, and adjusted for ballpark factors. An ERA+ over 100 is better than average, less than 100 is below average.

Vazquez also had an ERA+ of 135 in 01, 106 in 02 and 154 in 03.

For comparisons sake, Contreras had a ERA+ of 122 in 2005, and 132 so far this season.

Looks pretty similar there to me.

I'd rather look at 04,05 and 06 than look at 01,02,03. It seems a better indicator of what to expect. Vazquez is a far better pitcher when there is little to no pressure on him. If the Sox score 9 runs in the first 3 innings, he generally cruises. He pitched great in meaningless games for the Expos. Throw him on the mound in a tough situation and expect him to win, he will pitch well enough to lose.

Thanks for the explanation.

Javy sounds pissed at himself. He sounds fired up. I think he is still gonna have a big second half. I hope he stops using his curve ball somuch.

I liked that he didnt try to blame anyone else. He"s being a man about it and owning up to it.

This is the 2nd half ...........

On top of his poor pitching, Javy Vazquez seems to be the pretty boy type that doesn't get his hands dirty and doesn't possess the grinder personality. I formed this opinion on him for two reasons: not defending his teammate AJ Pierzynski when he was twice intentionally hit by pitch by Padilla, and for regularly crumbling with men on base.

Well from what I saw yesterday I think Hawk & DJ were right on. Javy will throw a first-strike, then start tossing junk trying to bait hitters the rest of the count.

He needs to attack the strike zone and let his pitches do their thing.

B-Mac said once last year that he'd rather throw his hardest and get knocked for a homer than have it be off some crap pitch.

I think that advice could be great for Javy too.

It seemed like every second pitch yesterday was a breaking ball low and away, not even close. And I was really paying attention, as I hope Coop was.

good we need javy to get fired up. BUT WE ALSO NEED OUR OTHER PITCHERS TO GET FIRED UP ALSO

mark and freddy have been terrible and garland either throws a shutout or gives up 7 runs and jose is on the downfall

Hopefully Javy's comments gets everyone fired up

Vazquez pitched in a pretty big park in a division that, for years, only had one good team (the Braves). Oh, and in the NL. He had no pressure on him, and he was in a pretty good position to succeed, IMO.

Comparing Vazquez to Contreras is almost a slap in the face of the Count.

Plus, Contreras was an International Stud for Cuba before coming to Chicago. His entire career was a huge success pre-New York, and that was an aberration caused by a series of unfortunate events in his life, mental and mechanical.
