A. Jones to White Sox?

From CNNSI:

• The Braves are shopping Andruw Jones around, hoping to land young pitching in return for the eight-time Gold Glove center fielder. Atlanta asked the White Sox for right-hander Brandon McCarthy but were rejected. They are still in talks with the Red Sox for a package that may include left-hander Jon Lester, who is 5-1 with a 3.49 ERA during his rookie season.

I love Brandon McCarthy, but come on, if this is a straight up deal I'd do it in a heartbeat. Move Anderson to left, bench pods. That would be a huge bat in the lineup but would also solidify our outfield defense.

I'm willing to bet it wasn't just BMac.

If it's just BMAC to get Jones, KW should be shot for not making the trade. There got to be many others beside BMAC that the Braves want. Or perhaps, Jones' contract and salary are just way too big for the Sox to manage, especially when the Sox already has one of the highest payrolls in the league.

The clock is ticking-if why not improve the defense and help the pitching that way?

Brian Anderson is close to on par with Andrew Jones if you are talking defense only. If you throw McCarthy into the trade, they'd better get a reliever back somewhere because that bullpen would look awful thin again.

My only hope is that in three years, we won't look back and think "what the hell were we thinking by making McCarthy an untouchable", in the same way that we were with Borchard a few years ago. I like McCarthy, but he's no sure thing to become a #1 or 2 starter.

I'd also do that immediately.

I'm still completely puzzled by everyone so high on McCarthy. He's a good pitcher, a nice 3-5 starter in the next few years, but I don't think he's got the stuff to be a top-tier kind of guy down the road. I mean, we're talking about a guy with a 4.17 ERA and 34Ks in 54 innings. And while those aren't the most important stats around, he just isn't a guy who blows anyone away. It's not like he's Kazmir or Liriano. Hell, he might not even be Boof Bonser.

I'm not saying he's bad, or he's going to be a bad pitcher, but my feeling is that everyone here is overrating his value simply because he's "home grown". If you can get A-Jones for him straight up, I say go ahead.

True. Its not like he has a power arm etc. He is a location guy with 2 nice pitches. If Andrew Jones is to be had, we take him.

Reliever? How about Smoltz?:)

I thought we just acquired Jacque Jones to play left field (that was my thought) and honestly it wouldn't be horrid. He could play defense throughout the outfield.

But I realize most everyone hates Jacque Jones, although I've long been a big fan.

Jacque would be an improvement over Podsednik, but not a huge one. Not to mention the price we would probably have to pay to get him.

The Cubs would love to get rid of his 3 year deal in order to free up money and playing time for a big name acquisition this offseason.

That's what I don't get! Many peoples on this board are just having a LOVE for BMAC. I only see him as a little above average pitcher. In my eyes, his highest ceiling would be as a #3 starter. However, I will only want to move BMAC for Soriano (if signed not rental), Tejada or Andruw Jones.

That's possible, but hearing what they are asking for for Maddux makes me shudder to think what they'd want for Jacque.

He would be a nice high average backup.

I would only acquire him as a starter.

Well folks, the clock is ticking down almost to the deadline, and nothing is imminent. I guess we just have to gut it out with what we currently have. Once the trade deadline is over, I kinda thinking that the team will get back on the right track and win a playoff spot.

I doubt McCarthy is untouchable. It's really impossible from second or third-hand reports on trade rumors to know what the deal really was. I agree with whomever it was posted that the deal probably wasn't straight-up.

I think most people realize that McCarthy will be lucky to have Jon Garland's career. A SP that can post a 4.5 ERA for league minimum is still pretty valuable, so that's not a huge knock on him.

I do think KW would do that trade staright-up since Jones has another contract year. But it really wouldn't fix what's hurting the Sox, and Jones won't get them into the playoffs. I wouldn't want KW to trade BMac for a rental position player, because I don't see any of them getting the Sox the wild card.

As for Borchard, he brought a pretty good lefty reliever :)

You hit the nail on the head right there. They are thinking about Brandon replacing one of their starters at a savings of about 10 million dollars a year, plus not wanting to add another $13 million a year long term on top of that. To the Sox that is the equivilent of adding about $20 million a year in payroll, and giving up their top prospect. Remember this is more than just Xbox trades going on here folks. Just because the names wow you, doesn't mean the trade is right.

Thanks SS2K5, that's what I think is going on. BMAC is a good pitcher, but no way he is untouchable based on his talent. His next to nothing contract is what appealed to KW.
