rangercal
Just curiosity. But would it have been likely that Liriano would have been MORE available than Felix Diaz at the time ? I'm Not bashing Kenny. Just curiosity how Diaz and Liriano compared back then as prospects.
WhiteSoxfan1986
I looked at some old prospect lists at BA, and Diaz was ranked as the 5th best prospect in the Giants system in 2002, and liriano wasn't even ranked. In 2003, Diaz was our 8th best prospect and Liriano was the Giants 4th best prospect. So, we might have been able to get him, but I assume he had a really good year in 2002. I forgot who else we got in the 2002 fire sale. I know we got Adkins for Ray (would have been MUCH, MUCH better off getting a first round pick in return). Yeah I don't think anyone on here liked that Durham for Adkins trade when it happened. Certainly in hindsight, I'm sure Kenny wouldn't make that type of deal again, and it was a learning experience for him.
danman31
Adkins wasn't that bad. The odds of a first rounder being better than that are actually pretty bad.
rangercal
I hated the Adkins deal. I remember he was interviewd on the score afterwards. Mike North I think it was, was asking him very tough questions. Like, are you shocked how lopsided this deal was? I thought we could ge a LOT more for Durham. southsider2k5
Was Liriano drafted or signed as a FA? Also what year was he drafted if he indeed was?

He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2000. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/L/F...o-Liriano.shtml
witesoxfan
The previous CBA ended in August of 2002, and at the time of discussions of a new CBA, there was no guarantee that there would be compensation for any players ever. As is, it's still here, and the Durham for Adkins deal looks pretty bad, but at this point in time, I don't give a flying Fukuoka
