beleiveinbrian44
Alfonso Soriano has been placed on waivers, according to a FOXSports.com report. But his next stop most likely will not be Detroit. It's unlikely that the Red Sox and Yankees would fail to place a claim on Soriano, who was a second baseman for the majority of his career. -- Detroit Free Press it says yankees and redsox but could the sox have claimed him? aboz56
I doubt he would have even gotten to an AL team. A NL team surely would have claimed him first.
Kalapse
The Red Sox are ahead of the White Sox, Yankees and Tigers on the waiver list so it's likely that if he did fall that far it would have been the Red Sox that caimed him.
southsider2k5
I am 100% positive the White Sox would claim him just to block the Tigers from replacing Polanco.

HuskyCaucasian
Almost every player on every team gets placed on waivers. This is nothing unexpected. I am sure Thome was placed on waivers as well. Once he gets claimed, you pull him back and it's done with. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Punch and Judy Garland
Exactly because if you "waive' all of your players, teams might not know which one you REALLY want to slip through. If you put, for instance, Andruw Jones-Chipper-Giles-Smoltz on waivers, maybe Danys Baez goes unclaimed. Thats the rationale anyways, plus it can't hurt you to have options. Although, you can only be waived once after aug 1 so there is strategy on when you do it

Nope the Red Sox would remain in their current spot on the waiver list, you only move up/down the waiver list in Fantasy Baseball.

jackie hayes
The Sawks didn't claim Lopez, anyway. He passed through waivers completely, giving Baltimore the right to trade him anywhere.

southsider2k5
QUOTE(RME JICO @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 07:37 AM) I thought that most teams put a lot of players on the waiver wire to mask the players they want to move. If they didn't do that teams would low-ball them. Pretty much the facts are scattered through this thread -All players are placed on waivers during August. -7 players per day can be placed on waivers, and teams tend to bunch them up in groups of 7 as to mask who they are looking to deal, and to see what is interested in which particular guys. -If you claim a player there starts either a 48 hour window to work out a trade, or the team can decide to just let the player go, and that team claiming the player picks him and his entire contract site unseen, unlike a trade which is done pending a physical. The vast majority of players who get claimed, get pulled back as nothing can be worked out usually. -Waiver deals are incredibly more difficult than regular trades, because it only takes one team to screw up a deal by claiming a player. Texsox
And I always wonder why certain players get some press for being on the list and others do not. Do sports writers try and pick the biggest names that could be dealt? That would make the most sense.

Do sports writers try and pick the biggest names that could be dealt? That would make the most sense. Because it is supposed to be an anonymus process so the only time when something like this is made public, it is someone in a teams front office who is looking for PR when they do it. CanOfCorn
Another waivers question: Do waivers work for the 40-man roster or just the 25-man roster? Meaning...does someone like Jerry Owens or Boone Logan also go through the waiver process?
HuskyCaucasian
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 09:54 AM) Another waivers question: Do waivers work for the 40-man roster or just the 25-man roster? Meaning...does someone like Jerry Owens or Boone Logan also go through the waiver process? Waivers: A player usually takes three business days to clear waivers if no one claims him. Once he clears, the team can trade him, outright him to the minors (if he doesn't have 5 years of major league experience), or release him for the rest of the waiver period (the rest of the calendar month). If a player is claimed, the original team has 48 hours to let him go, pull him off, or negotiate a trade. Teams can put a maximum of seven players a week on waivers and can only make 40 claims a week. Almost every player is placed on waivers at some point during a season, but most will be pulled back or clear. When a player is placed on waivers, every team has a chance to claim him within three business days. If more than one team claims a player the team in the same league has preference and the team lower in the standings if all are in the same league (exception: in March and April, the standings from the previous standings are used). A player is often placed on waivers to be taken off the 40-Man roster, although in August and September a player must pass through waivers to be traded. The original team may block a claim and pull a player off waivers once a month. The next time a player is placed on waivers that month a claim cannot be blocked and the player automaticall goes to the other team. There are three main types of waivers: unconditional release waivers, irrevocable waivers, and procedural waivers (which allow players to be traded or sent outright to the minors). Waivers are completely confidential and officials may not disclose to the media the waiver status of any player. http://kmbumb.people.wm.edu/roster/glossary.html Seems like if you are on the 40 man, you must clear waivers.
