Chocola hosting immigration forum Tuesday

From Staff Reports

U.S. Rep. Chris Chocola leads a forum in South Bend on Aug. 22 with local public officials to discuss immigration and border security proposals.

On July 26, the full Ways and Means Committee held a hearing in Washington, D.C., to review the impact of immigration on programs in the Committee's jurisdiction. Members heard testimony from agency officials from the Department of Homeland Security, the Internal Revenue Service, the Social Security Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Chocola, a member of the committee, organized the forum to follow up on the full Committee hearing and highlight the effects of immigration in Indiana.

He will be accompanied at the forum by Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Jim McCrery and U.S. Rep. Steve Buyer.

The forum will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the County-City Building, 227 W. Jefferson Blvd. in South Bend.

Other panelists include Mitch Roob, secretary of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration; David Van Ryn, medical director, Department of Emergency Medicine, Elkhart General Hospital; Randy Thompson, medical director, Department of Emergency Medicine, St. Anthony Memorial Hospital; Ed Nelson, president and chief operating officer, Indiana Packers Corp.; and James Martin, Chicago regional commissioner for the Social Security Administration.
