Phils CF Rowand could miss rest of the year with broken ankle

Aug. 22, 2006

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Phillies center fielder Aaron Rowand could miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken ankle in a nasty collision in Monday's 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Rowand was put on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, but is expected to miss four to six weeks, team officials said. Rowand has been outstanding defensively for the Phillies, who are locked in a tight race for the wild card.

Rowand broke his left ankle in the bottom of the eighth inning when he collided with second baseman Chase Utley while charging a short fly ball by John Mabry. Rowand hobbled off the field and was taken to a hospital for X-rays.

It's the second time this season the gritty Rowand has been put on the DL for a fracture. In May he missed two weeks with a fractured nose and broken bones around his left eye after he ran face-first into the outfield wall to make a catch.

Rowand is hitting .262 with 12 home runs and 47 RBIs this season after arriving in Philadelphia from the Chicago White Sox in a trade for Jim Thome.

He will return to Philadelphia from Chicago to see a specialist after he is cleared to fly.

So, I'm likely to get a lot of anger directed at me after this post, but what are the chances that the Phillies don't use his option? He hasn't put up the numbers that he has in the past, plus his defense hasn't been nearly as good as it was last year. With them trying to go through a rebuilding process, is it a certainty that he'll be with them next year?

If he does become a FA, what are the odds that he replaces Pods in LF, or even becomes the right handed fourth outfielder off the bench? Would he even accept the role of a 4th outfielder (even if this is a team managed by Ozzie)?

I don't mind the post at all, but I think they'll pick up the option. Now if Abreu were stilll around there, HE GAWN, but with Abreu gone, they need another proven MLB outfielder like Rowand next year.

We need that kind of heart on our team.

We don't need him making the kind of play that broke his ankle. He had no reason to be breaking his ankle over Utley when the ball was already in Utley's glove. I don't know what he watching when he was running. It certainly wasn't Utley or the ball, as they were in the same place.

When you are chasing after a ball (that was his by the way), you are running full speed and watching the ball. By the time he noticed it was in Utley's glove, there was no chance in hell he was going to be able to avoid him.

I absolutely love this, I mentioned it in the Catch-All thread earlier in the week, Rowand would be the perfect 4th OF for thie team. I really wish he was still on the Sox but only as a 4th OF and yes I do think he'd accept such a role.

It would make me quite happy if he did come back as the fourth (or third) outfielder. I think he would too, but I don't know for certain. I do know that he loves the city of Chicago and the White Sox, so I think that he might take a smaller role.

Rowand would be an awesome LF.....but I seriously doubt he gets traded back.

I doubt he'd be traded back too, I'm just wondering if the Phillies will pick up his option or not. If they don't, KW could look to sign him.

Well, I'll get s*** for this, but I don't want him getting hurt for 2 1/2 months of the year trying to make a single play if he comes back to this team.

We all love the intensity, yes. But catching a fly ball in the 5th inning just isn't worth sitting out a big percentage of the season.

It's not like he knows he's going to lose 2.5 months while trying to make the play.

I saw more intensity from Rowand in that third of an inning than I've seen from the entire White Sox team in about a month and a half.

f***ing go get him. Be it starting, getting 300 ABs off the bench, acting as a cheerleader, whatever, so be it...bring his ass back here. This team needs some kind of spark, it may as well be Rowand.

He might have been the motivation that this team has lacked this season.

I think he is. KW, before the 2004 season, wanted to go get some "grinders." Grinders were guys who didn't put up good stats, but hustled, busted their ass, and wanted to win. We shipped the original grinder out of town for the offense you are looking at now.

I am sure I will get shot here for saying this, but Rowand should not of been going after that ball like he did. Yeah, he's a grinder, yeah, he gives it his all, but that was Utley's ball and he was there easy. Rowand even slowed down for the ball after utley called it, then decided to go back in for it.

Don't get me wrong, I love ARow's hustle. He is a true old school balls out player and I respect him for that, but he broke his ankle on that play and nearly hurt the teams best player in doing so.

Didn't Ozzie ask for a team built around pitching, speed and defense? Can't fault Kenny on the pitching too much since we didn't realize a majority of the guys returning would suck this year but where's the speed and defense?

Does Jim Thome hustle, bust his ass, and want to win?

Touche. I should have clarified that I was never criticizing KW for making the move, just that losing Rowand probably hurt more than we initially realized. I loved the move, and still do.

However, Thome's philosophy offensively is to hit the ball as hard as you can, and to try and hit homers. The rest of the offense has taken on this mindset, and thus you do not see grinderball or smallball anymore, with the exception of Podsednik occasionally trying to steal a base, and getting picked off of first base like an assclown. We are very 1-dimensional offensively.

I agree. The kamikaze stuff may be gutsy, but it's a pyrric victory if you break your ankle and are now out for months. Running into the wall is one thing, but going banzai like that without any thought to the consequences is just... well, reckless.

I'm not saying that's what he did on this play, but this play was bad. A perfect example of what happens when communication breaks down. It's what cost us Magglio in 2004, and what damn near cost us Gooch this year.

That said, of course I'd love Rowand back on the Sox. Not sure where we'd put him (sorry but I like Anderson in CF), but it sure wouldn't suck, if there's a legit place for him. I highly doubt Philly's gonna dump him though...
