tony72
A starter get pulled right away such as in the first inning when it is obvious they are going to lay an egg pitching that night.. Say for example tomorrow Freddy goes in the very first inning (after we give him an early 2 to 0 lead) and gives up back to back to back singles right away... I would love to see Ozzie or Cooper just go in and pull them then and there and just embarass the h--- out of that pitcher, although it would wear our bullpen..I would just love to see the message sent.this crap is not going to be tolerated! If you can't pitch you sit! What are we 'saving' our bullpen for if they always have to come in in the 7th or 8th down 4 or 5 runs? It might send a message to Freddy, Jose, Javier, etc to man the heck up and pitch !
Felix
If you want to have a bullpen pitching for the rest of the week, then you wouldn't do this.

The only change would be McCarthy, but it's not like he's Cy freaking Young or anything.

I am not saying every time pull the guy...just once - maybe the message would get through that - oh, it doesn't matter if you give up 7 or 8 runs..you stay until the 7th so we can rest the bullpen..maybe they might toughen up a little and not give up a ton of runs..I am not being reactionary..I know we are going to lose games like every team...I just think the leash is way too long on our starters. You want to win that game that day..not be worrying..well gotta rest so and so for the next game, series, etc. The focus should be on that game that day. I admit, it probably wouldn't work...but arent' you tired of seeing the same thing over and over again from our starters?

Aren't we leaving them in the game for a long time, no matter how good or bad they're doing? I'd rather see Ozzie pull them after 5 bad innings then after 7 bad innings. Taking a pitcher out early isn't the smartest thing for him, or for the team, and just hurts it in the long run. It takes confidence away from the pitcher (although thats probably overrated) and puts the rest of the game (which is 9 innings if you suggest taking the pitcher out after 2 consecutive singles) on the shoulders of the bullpen, which is used to covering what, 2 or 3 innings a game. Not only will the bullpen let up more runs than the starter would if he was kept in, but it would drain them for the next game, making Ozzie go to a worse pitcher (Riske, Cotts) at the end of the game since the others (Thornton, McCarthy, Jenks, MacDougal) are resting. Brian
I think this is brilliant. Than we can start throwing at the other team and start a brawl. That will bring it all together.

I don't know that a bullpen can necessarily be overused..sometimes I think a bullpen can be underused like a muscle.. Sometimes a bullpen can get rusty if it doesn't pitch enough...maybe it might be better with more innings (not 8 of course every game) but 3 or even 4 sometimes..the pitchers might actually get stronger from the work.. As for confidence..I just hope in October we are not watching the Twins and other teams on TV in the playoffs and saying "well, we didn't make the playoffs but at least our pitchers have high self esteem ;O) )...they are making millions, they are there to help us win, not to be treated like Dr. Phil by the manager... greg775
Tony 72 you are assuming the starters need some message sent. It could be as simple as they want to win, but just have s*** stuff this year. For whatever reason. I don't think they need any messages sent. If they suck they suck. I think they are trying to get hitters out. It just ain't happening this year.

You pull a young kid who's trying to figure out how to pitch in the big leagues after 5 after he gives up a leadoff single in the 6th when he has 85 pitches, then you are taking confidence away from him. Every pitcher in the White Sox rotation has been around the block, they know what it takes, and if they need their egos massaged, they can get the flying fish out of town. I would love something like this to happen. Your bullpen is completely burnt for the next 4 days, yes, but you are embarrassing the holy piss out of whoever is pulled. You think anyone likes being embarrassed, especially these 8 digit figure pitchers? Tell them to STFU and do their job, or they won't pitch. Period. Cooper had to f*** with these guys somehow. Garland has been winning but he's getting huge run support. There's something the coaches have to answer for. That can backfire on the manager by players quitting on Ozzie, the last thing anyone wants right now. I think he needs to skip Buerhle a start and give it to BMac or some other guy they call up from AAA. That might help Buerhle to collect himself mentally, without embarrassing him.
