WhiteSoxfan1986
I have been thinking about this for a while, have Mack lead off and play left some of the time. He has a higher average and walks a lot more than Pods. Plus, he would be an upgrade defensively. Add in the fact he wouldn't be taking as much time away from BA. Yes, Pods has 33 stolen bases, but he has gotten caught almost half the time. Mack might be able to steal some, he has 5 while only being caught once. It will probably never happen but I wanted to get everybodys thoughts on it.

NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 23, 2006 -> 01:56 PM) Terrible idea. I'll probably regret this, but... I disagree. I think its an excellent idea. He'd be better defensively, have similar speed, way better offensively... I see no downside. Enlighten me. He'd be better defensively, have similar speed, way better offensively... I see no downside. Enlighten me. Macowiak is not an everyday player on a good team, much less a leadoff hitter. He's basically this year's version of Pods without the elite speed. He's a career .262 hitter with a .333 OBP, and only has 45 stolen bases in 6 years. I don't know how you can say he has similar speed. He's got some more power and I'll admit he's probably a better defender, but that doesn't mean he can lead off for what is supposedly a World Series contender. Balta1701
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 23, 2006 -> 11:59 AM) I'll probably regret this, but... I disagree. I think its an excellent idea. He'd be better defensively, have similar speed, way better offensively... I see no downside. Enlighten me. First off, I don't see the "Similar speed". Even in Podsednik's now weakened state, I think that Goes to Scott by quite a bit. Secondly, Scott sees a lot of pitches per plate appearance. Out of people with 200+, Scott is 28th. (Thome is 6th, Dye is 23rd, which is a bit odd since he used to be on the other side of that list.) Rob M. is 143rd. I think that's an important thing for a leadoff hitter, and Pablo drives me nuts for that same reason. 3rd, Rob is just terrible against lefties, so you still wind up with him as a platoon player with Pablo. 4th, Rob is either as streaky or streakier than Podsednik. But the key is: Rob is a bette player (streakiest included.) He is far away a better hitterm, will field better in left and gives a better presence at the plate. I don't see how he's far away a better hitter, his career batting average and OBP numbers are almost exactly the same as Pods' this season. 200 AB's this year doesn't really mean as much since his at bats are sporadic. He doesn't play when he's hitting poorly now, unlike Pods. Plus he still doesn't really strike any more fear in the other team than Pods. We're going to need to find a new leadoff hitter from outside the organization next year.

Speed and SB's are not necessarily the same. And yeah, Pods is faster, but Mack is probably the 3rd fastest guy on the team. And Pods has been awful stealing this year anyway. Balta1701
Actually, on 2nd thought, this would be a great idea, solely because if Mackowiak was playing Left Field, he would not be playing Center Field. He could hit .220 out of the leadoff spot, and not having him in CF would give us a better chance to win games.
