santo=dorf
QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 06:59 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Tony what I'm saying is Anderson sucks, also. We would have been a much better team with the same pieces of last year. All the additions have been s***. McDougal, Riske, Mack, the list goes on. Rowand sucks this year too, and he's in the NL. MacDougal has been very good in his stint with the Sox with the exception of last night. Riske has been much better than Cliff Politte and Dustin Hermanson this season, you know, two guys that were "pieces" last season. Mack > Timo, but I could've sworn Mack was not brought here to exclusively play CF. It's really pissing me off.

3E8
I wish Contreras would use that drop-down angle very sporadically only to give hitters a different look throughout the game. With the drop-down the ball is bound to live only in the same plane as the bat swing. When he is over the top the ball exists in a plane perpendicular to the bat, and that's a good thing. Frankensteiner
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 07:01 PM) My hope is we trade Garcia. I'll take my chances next year with the starting 4 and McCarthy. I honestly feel like we have to improve our offense more than our pitching for next season. Current staff - Garcia + McCarthy = average. Not terrible like it is now, but not good either. I'd throw some money at Jason Schmidt although spending money on free agent pitchers is generally a bad idea.

Chisoxfn
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 04:59 PM) This was about the time last year where you and I started saying that all we have to do is make the playoffs, and then all the pressure will be off. I'm a born pessimist, but I just don't have that feeling with this year. This team has no chemistry, and the players just don't seem to care. Oh ya, last year we were right on about that. This year I have the exact opposite mind set. I think if we make the playoffs we have very little chance. The only reason I'd give us any chance is the fact that no team in baseball (at least playoff wise) really has a rotation that scares you.

greg775
Greg, look at the stats. Rowand has done nothing in Philly and he doesn't even hold BA's jock strap defensively. Offensively Rowand has also been worse the past two months. This isn't on Kenny, albeit he should have gotten us an extra outfielder that could play CF. However, there is no reason to not play the best defensive cfer in baseball (statistically speaking) damn near every day (and that person is Brian Anderson). I know, I'm just pissed and frustrated. We have so much money locked up in our current 5 starters, it's not going to give Ozzie a lot of flexibility with the starting rotation. We would have been a much better team with the same pieces of last year. All the additions have been s***. McDougal, Riske, Mack, the list goes on. Greg, ask Hawk what he thinks of Brian. I think him and DJ already think he's one of the 3 best defensive outfielders in all of baseball. Offensively he's hitting over .280 or so since the ASB (IIRC). The guy is a top notch prospect who continues to get better and he is one of the few guys that is actually doing things right. You don't expect a 9 hole hitter to dominate, you expect them to play top notch defense and be able to bunt and ocassionally come through. The past month BA has probably had more big hits than anyone not named Jermaine Dye or Joe Crede.

fathom
I've said this about Contreras for two months now. His best pitch is the forkball. However, he seems to have fallen in love with an average, at best, slider, and he hangs that pitch far too often during the game. If you go back and watch him during his great stretch last year, he was basically a sinker/forkball pitcher.

Current Jon Garland + Mark Buehrle every year except 2006 + Jose Contreras from July 05-May 06 + Brandon McCarthy = one of the top starting rotations in baseball. These guys are still not "5.00 ERA" pitchers.

Frankensteiner
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 07:03 PM) Here's the other side of the token...Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland, and Jose Contreras are all significantly better than the numbers they've put up this season. Vastly better. We've seen Garland and Conteras both go through really rough stretches that have hurt their numbers for the season, and we've seen Buehrle be terrible for about 2 months. But these guys are NOT pitchers who put up ERA's between 4.5-5.0. Jon Garland had a terrible start to the season...is there any reason to think that he is guaranteed to have another bad 1st half next year? No. Mark Buehrle can throw up an ERA around 3 for a season, is there any rational reason to believe that he'll put up 5's the rest of his career? I don't think so. At some point, these guys' numbers are going to even out. This season has been so bad for them, that you just have to think they have some good pitching left in them. Javier Vazquez and Freddy Garcia were both significantly better than what they are now. Just because they were better in the past doesn't mean much for the future. For all we know, the league has caught up to Buehrle. Jose Contreras is 47 years old and seems to go hot and cold for now. There's no guarantee he'll be better next year.
