Top of the 9th, what's your call?

  1. 1. What's your take on the top of the ninth? Be honest...

    • Jenks is the closer. Start the 9th with him and end the ninth with him.
      36
    • Jenks should have started the 9th but been pulled after the first one or two batters.
      30
    • Thorton or Hermanson should have started the 9th.
      4
    • Ozzie's the best. 2005 2005 2005! His chevy commercials are funny. I smell like cat food.

    • Ozzie's an idiot. Worst manager ever. What has he ever done for us? Crayons make me angry.

This is all hindsight now, but Jenks had to start the inning.

I agree.

Everyone seemed kinda mad at each other in the game thread. Now that we've won, and heads are cooled off, maybe we can make some relevant conversation. I'm actually pretty disturbed by the whole situation. First, something's wrong with our closer. Second, I generally support Oz, but I'm on the edge. Some of the managing is starting to eat at me. Whether or not that's my place to assess those judgements is another matter. However, it appeared to me, at least, that it was the wrong call keeping Bobby in that long.

Following the first double in the 9th:

Garcia starts tend to have that effect on people.

This is currently the best defensive OF we've had all year, it's a damn shame we'll never be able to see it for a full game though.

THORNTON NOW!

Following the 2nd double:

I don't criticize ozzie because I believe in his managerial skills. I think many of you are forgetting that Ozzie instills confidence in his players by showing that he trusts in their abilities. So I don't mind that he left Jenks in, not because we won but because Jenks will have the confidence next time around to close out a perfect game. Just remember without this ingredient we wouldn't be World Series champs.

Ok, it's very likely that if the Sox did end up losing this game they may not even make the playoffs. You can't go around sacrificing games in the name of confidence especially in September when you're a game back in the Wild Card race.

Is there a time and a place for certain managers though? Maybe his style was conducive to last year's team but has a degrading effect on this years? I'm not saying one way or another because that's just hyphothetical...

If in the series finale there is a save opp., do you handle the situation the same just to instill confidence in Bobby?

That my friend is the difference betweenyou and me and the Oz haters.

They fail to realize IMO there is a reason we finally won a World Series, it is

the intangibles Oz brings.

They go by specific decisions that 90 percent of all managers would make

the same move as Ozzie and if the move fails they blast him.

They feel they are right and laugh at me and others who suggest Oz

might be right.

Folks ... Oz is not trying to reinvent the game. He makes the same decisions

all managers make.

You act like he is a fricking buffoon.

He has been around the game 25 years. He is not a moron.

What separates him is what this poster said. We can agree to disagree but

I wish some of you guys would consider the intangibles and realize ALL managers

can be second guessed on decisions. Frick, where do you think the term

arm chair quarterback and second guessing came from?????

Oz IMO is a genius. I love the guy.

Where does the term first guessing come from...?

BTW, if every manager knew everything, all the time, and made every correct decision...no manager would ever get fired.

Don't tell that to these Ozzie haters. They are the virtual armchaired know-it-all managers. They would never make a mistake.

Oh my gosh, why Hermanson is warming up? Put Jenks in. After two doubles, oh my gosh, Jenks is not doing well, put Thornton in. And if two more doubles, should have left Jenks in there...

I agree. If Ozzie had brought in Hermanson or Thronton and they did what Jenks did, Ozzie would be ripped by media and fans alike---and deservedly so.

But now that the fans and media can see (as well as Ozzie) that Jenks hip problem is a bigger deal, then we can understand why the next cosing situation goes to someone else until Jenks feels better.

If I was manager I never would have played Bobby because of that hip problem. I would have gone with Thornton or Hermanson. I would have Hermanson or MacDougal as the closer until Bobby's hip feels better. I realize these guys are competitors and will say they are fine to get in the game, but the manager has to use his own judgement in those situations also.

Sorry if I offend anyone here;

Jenks if he said he was healthy starts the 9th. NO DEBATE AT ALL. If you think not, you do not understand baseball.

Now he has a hip thing, after the first two doubles, you pull him for the lefty match up. He was not throwing well.

The Sizemore hit was a flare. But here and more importantly, why wasn't Konerko guarding the line for Michaels it was a tie game and the go ahead run was on second so I suppose you want to take away the hit through the infield? Also, why was Anderson playing the second batter in the 9th to pull so much especially with Sweeney in left?

We were playing up for the bunt. And for the Marte double....that's a play that Anderson has to cut-off. If Mackowiak did that, we would have never heard the end of it.

You know what, if you want to discuss it then do so, just knock this s*** off. If you truely believe any of this s*** to be the case then you didn't read the game thread in the top of the 9th last night.
